The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is currently seeking a Project Coordinator at its Mary D. Pretlow Anchor Branch.

This position manages the operation of the Randi Marston Peterson Maker Studio within the Pretlow Branch of the Norfolk Public Library system.


Departmental Hiring Salary Range:
$52,755


Essential Functions:


Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the day-to-day Maker Studio operations, introducing and nurturing strong community partnerships, overseeing staffing, space, resource use, and financial planning.
  • Managerial duties will include planning, coordinating, and administering programs and planning expenditures.
  • Develops and implements program goals and objectives of the RMP Maker Studio.
  • Ability to rapidly adapt, troubleshoot, and problem solve to facilitate efficient use of the makerspace. Ability to envision and propose new methods to perform tasks that support design thinking culture.
  • Assists with developing budgets, seeking additional grant funding, and monitoring expenditures.
  • Coordinates programming efforts by working with all branches and other departments in planning and executing programs.
  • Assists with the acquisition of equipment and materials for programming projects.
  • Assists with the staff interview process and make hiring recommendations for Maker Space personnel.
  • Plan for future technology, paradigms, and growth of innovation culture and facilities. Playing a key strategic role in helping build a culture of innovation.
  • Provide library patrons opportunities to ideate, make, build, and test their entrepreneurial concepts.
  • Responsible for instituting programs on safety, training, access, and workflow.
  • Responsible for assessing equipment, programs, and processes on a regular basis, as well as advising leadership on new technologies and trends in innovation, makerspace, and entrepreneurship.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues that arise and work to quickly resolve any needed repairs with library administration and other city departments.
  • Plan Maker Studio classes and events that are engaging and inclusive, especially those traditionally underrepresented in makerspace communities.
  • Provides regular updates to administrators and community stakeholders on the Maker Studio.

Education/Experience:

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Three (3) years experience in a field related to the program/project; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Preferred Education/Experience:

Master's Degree Preferred.
Experience in compiling data and development of policies and procedures.
Work requires the ability to write performance plans, work plans, and reports.
Work requires the supervision of staff and day-to-day operational management of the Maker Studio Space.


Additional Information & Requirements:


Work Hours: 40 hour work week; Monday-Friday or Saturday-Thursday, depending on programs and events in the calendar


Signing Bonus:
This position is eligible for a one-time $5000 sign on bonus
