Job Duties


The Deputy Clerk (Grade 8) is assigned docket and operational responsibilities in a high volume, fast paced office with frequent, critical deadlines.

This individual must be committed to providing excellent customer service to a diverse population, responding to external and internal stakeholders and court users with a friendly, courteous, and positive attitude and a desire to work in a team environment.

The Deputy Clerk must uphold the Oath of Office and keep the work of the Williamsburg/James City County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in the strictest of confidence.


Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent required.

Qualified applicants must possess a positive attitude, be able to meet strict deadlines, and handle a high volume of paperwork.

Applicants should be highly detail-oriented, accurate, and possess strong time management and customer service skills.

Applicants must have the ability to explain procedures in a clear and easy to understand manner in person, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, and have advanced knowledge of office automation systems and computer software.

Applicants must demonstrate a proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and a high degree of data entry speed and accuracy.


Competitive applicants will be self-motivated, be able to work independently as well as part of a team and manage changing priorities.

Preferred applicants will have judicial system experience in the Commonwealth of Virginia, legal experience, professional office experience, customer service experience, and/or prior experience in a trauma-informed environment.


Additional Considerations


Prior data entry experience, financial experience, and experience providing face-to-face customer service interactions in a challenging environment is also preferred.
