- Attend the half-day LAC training at the beginning of the semester.
- Observe LAC staff engaging in patron assistance.
- Assist staff in serving patrons.
- Learn how to assess a patron's needs and legal status.
- Learn how to access LAC and SCAO forms.
- Learn how to complete LAC's legal forms and assist patrons in choosing and completing legal forms.
- Perform legal research as needed.
- Update patron materials as needed.
- Copy and collate documents.
- Assist staff in updating volunteer bulletin board.
- Accompany staff to community education and outreach events.
- May be responsible for greeting visitors, as well as answering and routing incoming calls.
- Handle documents and maintain appropriate confidentiality.
- Provide GREAT customer service, anticipating and exceeding the needs of our customers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Prior experience in a customer service or professional setting
- Paralegal student who has successfully completed Introduction to Paralegal Studies class.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours as an undergraduate student or 3 credit hours as a graduate student while meeting the standards of academic progress.
- Demonstrated ability to work accurately and effectively with computerized data systems (PC and mainframe).
- Excellent interpersonal skills that transcend diverse audiences; communicating to university customers with positive attitudes toward change, confidentiality, and conflict resolution.
- Demonstrated motivational and problem solving capabilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the mission of the University.
- Business office environment. Prolonged sitting and standing. Use of personal computer and telephone (eye and hand strain). Some travel between locations may be required (own transportation). No regular lifting requirements, occasional lifting up to 35 pounds.

SUMMARY:
This position acts as a general assistant to the staff of the Legal Assistance Center (LAC), a non-profit agency that provides legal information and assistance to individuals who are navigating the legal system without attorney representation.
The student would assist the staff in serving patrons by helping them choose and complete appropriate legal forms; returning patron telephone calls; performing legal research; drafting patron materials; and performing some general clerical office functions related to daily operations.
These responsibilities are performed in an ethical manner consistent with the University's mission, vision, and values which include diversity, equity and inclusion.
