ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Intermediate School

Reports to:

Terms: 247 days, 7.5 hour per day

Overall Area:

Assist the school principal in all areas of instructional leadership and management (to include, but not limited to, discipline, attendance, clinical supervision, curriculum development, and building management).

Essential Functions:

A.

Assist the principal in supervising and evaluating the job performance of all staff members in his/her assigned building within the guidelines of the Westfield Clinical Supervision Model.


  • 1. Direct the work of the building employees.
  • 2. Provide guidance, motivation, and encouragement to building staff members so that they may excel in their jobs.
  • 3. Provide positive corrections for personnel when their behavior warrants such action.
  • 4. Evaluate noncertified personnel as assigned by the principal.
  • B. Assist the principal in providing leadership and coordination to both faculty and students for the instructional program.
  • 1. Develop and coordinate the student extracurricular activities program.
  • 2. Assist in the preparation of the master schedule for staff and students.
  • C. Assist the principal in administering the school in accordance with Boardapproved policies, administrative procedures and State statutes.
  • 1. Develop the school's calendar of extracurricular activities for consideration with the corporatewide calendar.
  • 2. Direct and ensure that policies and administrative procedures are enforced.
  • D. Assist the principal in providing an effective and efficient school operation.
  • 1. Complete requested reports from local, state, and /or federal agencies.
  • 2. Approve the completeness of student cumulative records.
  • 3. Assist in the administering of the negotiated collective bargaining agreement at the building level.
  • 4. Assist in the administering of Special Education and 504 procedures.
  • E. Supervise student discipline and extracurricular activities in accordance with statute, policy, and procedures in cooperation with all staff members and bus drivers.
  • 1. Provide due process for all students.
  • 2. Provide orientation experiences for all students at the beginning of each school year to outline and discuss proper student behavior; to discuss rules and consequence for violation of said rules.
  • 3. Maintain the Student Handbook which contains printed school guidelines.
  • 4. Direct the schoolwide discipline program.
  • 5. Investigate and take appropriate action for student misconduct.
  • 6. Confer with teachers or bus drivers on discipline matters.
  • 7. Develop procedures to be used by teachers to report discipline problems.
  • 8. Suspend students from school when conduct warrants such action.
  • 9. Develop procedures for the maintenance of satisfactory student discipline at all school functions.
  • 10. Develop procedures and guidelines for all staff members to use to ensure consistency in discipline.
  • 11. Direct the filing and mailing of discipline referral and suspension notices to parents.
  • 12. Recommend suspension and expulsion of students in accordance with statutes, policy, and administrative procedure.
  • F. Supervise students' attendance policies, rules of conduct, and other regulations.
  • 1. Develop effective procedures to monitor student attendance.
  • 2. Develop procedures to confer with teachers, students and their parents when poor school attendance is confirmed.
  • 3. Take necessary steps to improve student attendance to include tardies, attendance by class period, and daily attendance.
  • 4. Maintain the Student Handbook which contains printed school guidelines.
  • G. Perform all duties which are necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the educational programs and services in the Corporation and which are related to the position of the Assistant Principal.
  • 1. Assume administrative responsibilities and authorities of the principal in his/her absence.
  • 2. Assign supervisory personnel to all social events.
  • 3. Assist in the planning of assemblies.
  • 4. Survey daily building needs such as lighting, ventilation, teacher station needs, exits, stairways, cleanliness, and safety.
  • 5. Coordinate fundraising activities in the building.
  • 6. Coordinate the security of the building by recording the distribution of master keys and classroom keys.
  • 7. Attend administrative meetings and other professional meetings as requested by the principal.
  • 8. Maintain membership in professional organizations.
  • 9. Supervise fire and disaster drills per State statute.
  • 10. Responsible for supervision in the cafeteria.
  • 11. Coordinate all school club activities.
  • 12. Assist with the development of the Master Schedule.
  • 13. Develop a school calendar that provides a year at a glance.
