***The Culinary Intern supports Future Achievers Preschool and will be responsible for preparing nutritious meals and snacks for the children (ages 2-5) as a Culinary Specialist. This position requires the individual to be enthusiastic, personable, and creative, with high ethical standards and enthusiasm for cooking and our mission. Additionally, this role will be responsible for preparing and distributing food to all children at the school and performing all related work as required. The Culinary Specialist will ensure that public health regulations and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) regarding food storage and preparation are met. This position reports directly to the Chief of Operations.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Kitchen Support (80%)

  • Planning of lunch menus and snacks by the USDA and CACFP Food Guide;
  • Posting of menus for parents and staff;
  • Conduct housekeeping tasks necessary to maintain the kitchen in an organized, clean, safe, and hygienic condition always;
  • Deliver and collect lunch/snack trays to/from all onsite programs;
  • Complete clean up after each meal (i.e., dishes, countertops, etc.);
  • Meet with the Health Inspector as required to ensure kitchen and practices follow the City's health code;
  • Conduct regular (weekly) inventory of kitchen equipment and supplies; and
  • Assist the Chief of Operations in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment by promptly reporting any existing and potential workplace hazards.

Program Support (10%)

  • Establish and maintain open communication with the Chief of Operations regarding children's dietary restrictions, allergies, etc;
  • Participate in fire drills and other emergency procedures as necessary;
  • Attend staff/program meetings as required; and
  • Participate in special events as assigned by the Chief of Operations.

Compliance Training (10%)

  • Attend professional development and other relevant training opportunities when available, e.g., remain current concerning Health Department regulations on proper food handling, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS
Incumbents must demonstrate the ability to follow policies and procedures as established in the Company's Employee Handbook.

Incumbents will also contribute to a positive work environment by behaving and communicating in a manner such that they get along with all constituent groups, co-workers, and management.

EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS

  • Have or can complete the Food safety certification within the allotted time; and
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited culinary program.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Six (6) months to one (1) year of culinary experience preferred.

KEY SKILLS SET

  • Ability to work independently and remain on schedule towards goals;
  • Knowledge of ingredients and preparation required;
  • Understanding of commercial kitchen operations;
  • Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Proficiency in Word and internet search engines;
  • Team player; and
  • Knowledge of the Logan Heights community.
