ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES **include the following:

  • Support HUSD Vision, Mission and Goals
  • Follows a schedule in order to provide services as support to students at several schools.
  • Reinforces skills through activities with students who have visual impairments in classrooms, onetoone, and/or small groups under the direction and supervision of a TVI.
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge and skill of human guide and instructional technology/tools used by students with visual impairment, including low vision devices, abacus, screen readers, etc.
  • Assist with collecting data on academic, behavioral, or selfhelp skills as instructed by a certificated teacher and/or service provider.
  • Support a certificated teacher and other support staff with the implementation of the IEP for student's disabilities; assist in monitoring students' progress toward achievement of IEP goals and objectives.
  • Confer with the Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to ensure the ontime availability of adapted instructional materials.
  • Under the direction of the instructor, provides instruction in Braille, large print, or both as well as technologies for the visually impaired. Converts Braille studentgenerated materials to print so that teachers may assess students' progress.
  • Enlarges print materials under the direction of a certified teacher of students with visual impairments. Binds materials using various methods.
  • Assists with modifying, enhancing, or adapting classroom activities, and assignments such as maps, manipulatives, classroom visuals, and art materials to support access for students with visual impairments, including the preparation of Braille or largeprint materials.
  • Assists with creating simple tactile images for communication systems, early literacy books, etc. using various tools, materials, and machines.
  • Assists with producing simple materials in braille for classroom use such as labels.
  • Assists with maintaining braille, large print, and instructional material inventory.
  • Assists with ordering special materials for use with visually impaired students. Arrange equipment repair.
  • Participate in professional development required to maintain current knowledge of assistive technologies, Braille, materials enhancement/modification, and orientation and mobility, needed to support students with visual impairment.
  • Assists with helping students with visual impairments access and accurately process visual information and develop visual skills for educational performance.
  • Attends inservices and additional classes to improve skills.
  • Assists with accommodations and modifications necessary for the student to be able to access the general curriculum and other activities.
  • Perform related duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:


  • High School diploma or equivalent required. Associates preferred.
  • Experience in area of regular education and/or special education with emphasis on work with visually handicapped students
  • Knowledge of needs of students at different age, cultural and educational
  • Ability to perform general clerical work and to use equipment unique to the VI


  • Level II

  • Library of Congress Braille transcriptionist certification required with Literary Braille and Nemeth Code Certification desired Knowledge of basic academic
  • Knowledge of and adheres to all policies, regulations, and
  • No convictions for felonies or crimes against children.
  • Valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms.

The employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; type/keyboard; and talk or hear.

The employee is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, sit, stand and walk, occasionally required to position body by bending body downward and forward by waist and crawl to reach in specific spaces.

Employee must on occasions lift, raise, and move up to 35 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
