ABOUT THIS POSITION:


The Public Works Department strives to improve the quality of life in Phoenix through the efficient delivery of outstanding solid waste, fleet, facilities, and energy management services.

The Public Works Department is seeking to fill a Laborer position.

Laborers perform manual work which may include general cleaning of streets, yards, and parking lots; litter control; landscaping; directing traffic; or driving vehicles.

Work is generally performed under the immediate direction of a supervisor, but many types of work assigned may be very routine and repetitive in nature and after once learned can be carried on without difficulty and only under general supervision.


SALARY:


Pay Range:
$17.30 to $25.56 per hour.

Hiring Range:
$17.30 to $20.02 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • There is no experience or training requirement for this entry level position
  • Requires the ability to:
  • Understand and follow oral and written instruction in the English language.
  • Learn and perform manual labor and operate handheld tools.
  • Work irregular shifts to include Saturdays and holidays.
  • Interact with all levels of the organization and provide top notch customer service.
  • Move heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or more may be required.
  • Bend, stand, or stoop repeatedly or continually over time, lift arms above shoulder level.
  • Work outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, dust, strong odors, and exhaust fumes.

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus experience with/in the following:

  • Working in a solid waste environment.
  • Performing heavy manual work.
  • Operating a forklift.
  • Supervising or leading a team.
  • Using twoway radios.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is desired, not required.
