      JOB SUMMARY:

      The Lactation Specialist is a clinically competent health care professional, delivers lactation

      assessment and instruction to obstetrical inpatients and outpatients. Effectively interacts with

      patients and other health team members, while maintaining standards of the International Board

      of Certified Lactation Consultants

      MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

      1. Employee demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to

      the age of the patients served on his/her unit as indicated by the following:

      * Demonstrates ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the

      appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her

      age-specific needs.

      * Identifies the physical, motor, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial characteristics for age

      group(s) served.

      * Demonstrates age appropriate communication skills.

      * Demonstrates ability to provide the care needed as described in the job description and

      the department's scope of service for the patient groups under his/her care.

      Age group(s) served will be one or more of the following: Infant (Birth to 12 months), Child

      (13 months to 12 years), Adolescent (13 years to 17 years), Adult (18 years to 69 years) or

      Geriatric (70 years and older).

      2. Meets core functions of RN job description after completing applicable competencies.

      3. Coordinates activities and integrates services by working closely with other departments in

      order to provide comprehensive services.

      4. Assesses mother-infant couples regarding lactation and provides appropriate education and

      interventions while the patient is in an inpatient or outpatient (support group) setting.

      5. Provides education regarding lactation to nursing staff.

      6. Communicates patient information through established standards of documentation and

      verbal interactions with all members of the health care team.

      7. Maintains a therapeutic and safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors by adherence

      to safety policies and procedures.

      8. Provides evidence of ongoing education to support clinical competency.

      9. Adheres to policies and procedures of the hospital and nursing division and standards of

      practice of the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants.
