    The Team

    The Finance Department provides leadership, guidance and oversight of Alight's financial resources. These Alight operations include planning, accountability, monitoring, headquarters accounting, grant management and field financial support.

    We have a unique approach to working with those we serve. Providing basic services just isn't our style. As such, the Finance department is part of a robust Platform Services team. This highly talented and technical group is comprised of Finance, Logistics, Grants Management, Administration, and IT.

    Platform Services provides adaptable and relevant support for our customers that will inspire and allow them to unleash their full potential.


    The Role

    Based in Minneapolis, you'll be guided by and receive support from the Finance Director.

    Simply put, your purpose will be to be Audit-ready at all times and ensure our staff are paid accurately and on-time.

    You'll perform established finance and payroll practices and ensure compliance with Alight policies and procedures for the payroll activities of the organization, including donor compliance plus state, local US government compliance.

    You'll know you're doing well if you're utilizing your past proven experience in multistate or international payroll to build up this function in the accounting team, take initiative to improve systems, and build the capacity of department.

    For now, here's how you could anticipate spending your time:

    Supervision - 15% of time


    • Supervise one additional Minneapolis payroll processing staff member, delegating appropriate tasks, providing adequate training and review and approve transactions.
    • Ensure that Minneapolis payroll staff member(s) are fully trained on all Alight payroll requirements including the use of Serenic, and ADP.
    • Validate the reconciliation of general ledger accounts.
    • Supervise payroll activities related to Alight & Affiliates U.S. local, U.S. Expatriates and nonU.S.
    Payroll (Alight & Affiliates) - U.S. local, U.S. Expatriates and non-U.S. Expatriates - 70% of time


    • Work closely with Human Resources to ensure payroll and all employee records are accurate.
    • Maintain codes and their special calculations (if any) in the ADP system.
    • Oversee online timesheets, follow up with employees and supervisors to resolve issues.
    • Confirm payroll accuracy, submit to ADP for previews, review all company codes payroll previews and supply backup documentation for all. Review HQ preview with Finance Director. Submit all to ADP.
    • Follow up with ADP on technical issues.
    • We have both monthly and bi-monthly payrolls. Payroll review and submission must be processed timely for each pay period to ensure all employees are paid timely.
    • Oversee online salary wire payment for payroll for approval. Maintain wire transfer templates accurately.
    • Maintain employee payroll records. Review and ensure accuracy of leave accrual report monthly, make necessary adjustments and update at year end. Provide reports, answer inquiries
    • Distribute per Pay Period, Quarterly and Annual reports Quarterly and Annual reports (941/940 and W-2s.)
    • Ensure Alight and all Affiliates are appropriately registered with state and local authorities and all withholding taxes are and payroll tax returns are filed and paid on time.
    • Perform other duties timely as assigned by the Finance Director.
    Audit (Alight & Affiliates) - 10% of time


    • Participate in year-end audit including providing all necessary documents.
    • There are in-country audits throughout the year by donating organizations. You must be prepared to provide timecards and salary information for these audits on a timely basis for services provided by staff on the ADP payrolls.
    • Ensure all Payroll files and supporting documentation are organized so they are Audit Ready at all times by maintaining them properly.
    • Communicate any problems or concerns regarding procedures or any other issues with management.
    New or Interesting Projects/Progressive Responsibilities - 5%

    We're also looking for the following technical competencies:


    • Formal Professional experience or Academic training in accounting, finance, or HR (with specialization in payroll) and at least 3-4 years' experience in overseeing/supervising payroll systems.
    • Proven experience as a payroll manager or similar role
    • Working knowledge of non-profit/fund accounting and ADP payroll system.
    • Excellent understanding of multi-location payroll and taxes
    • Current knowledge and understanding of U.S. and international payroll procedures and related laws and compliance.
    • Computer skills and knowledge of accounting systems such as Serenic Navigator or Microsoft Dynamics Nav (Navision).
    • Detail-oriented, organized and respect for accuracy in numbers is essential.
    • Ability to work well under pressure with distractions and meet deadlines.
    • Highly motivated self-starter
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team skills
