    The Seattle Police Department is actively recruiting for an Evidence Control Specialist, Senior.

    This is an excellent opportunity to implement skills and advance the effectiveness of law enforcement evidence storage within the Seattle Police Department.

    This position reports to the Detective Sergeant of the Evidence Unit.


    Position Responsibilities:


    The Evidence Control Specialist, Senior classification is distinct from Evidence Control Specialist because it is the next career step in the Evidence Control Specialist series.

    This position has lead worker responsibilities and/or performs additional complex tasks such as pulling items for clearing evidence for release, disposal, or auction.

    Special tasks are reviewed to ensure compliance with these procedures. The work requires knowledge of warehouse management and the special requirements needed to safeguard evidence.


    Additionally:

    • Utilize problem-solving skills to resolve issues.
    • Be a positive role model for this lead position with an excellent work ethic.
    • Provides information and expert advice to Evidence Warehousers, officers and detectives.
    • Attend meetings, when requested by the sergeant, to provide insight and expertise on a variety of evidence related issues.
    • Receives evidence from law enforcement officers such as money, narcotics, guns, and jewelry, etc., documents receipt for chain of custody.
    • Is quality control for all submitted items safeguarding them for prosecution purposes.
    • Retrieves and releases evidence for lab work, investigation, or court purposes/documents release.
    • Maintains special records and follows special procedures for documenting narcotics and gun transactions.
    • Prepares items for auction and pick up.
    • Provides information about evidence warehousing policies and procedures and location of evidence.
    • Ensures that storage areas are kept neat and orderly.
    • Creates bank deposit lists for evidence money transfer.
    • Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

    Required Qualifications:


    Requires two years of inventory, records management, and/or clerical experience (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).


    Position Requirements:

    • Must pass a Seattle Police Department background investigation.
    • Pass a drug test and a physical examination by a city-approved doctor.
    • Washington State Driver's License.
    • Completion of the in-house forklift training within 3 months of appointment.
    • This position is an onsite position; the employee is expected to perform work in person; there is no remote work. Individual schedules will be based on agreement between the employee and their supervisor.

    Work Environment/Physical Demands:

    • Required to work with toxic/hazardous/biohazardous substances.
    • Required to handle equipment such as less lethal weapons, firearms, and ammunition.
    • Required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays (contingent on staffing needs).
    • Required to lift up to 50 pounds.
    • Required to operate a forklift.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience in police evidence inventory or similar inventory skills are highly desirable; with an emphasis on electronic tracking and utilizing data-based receiving and purging of evidence.
    • Forklift and Order Picker certification is a plus, but not necessary.
    • Exemplary computer skills are necessary and must have an aptitude to learn new programs. Experienced in using Excel, Word, and Outlook.
    • Must work well with others in a team atmosphere.
    • Willingness to handle hazardous substances in a safe and legal manner.
    • Willingness to process items of evidence, which may be objectionable or unpleasant in nature (e.g., bloody, bug infested, pungent smelling).
    • Willingness to handle firearms, other weapons, and narcotics.
    • Must possess excellent communication skills and interact with the public, attorneys, detectives, and officers.
    • Be highly organized, trustworthy, methodical with an attention to detail along with the ability to triage and multi-task assigned workload.

    The full salary range for this position is $ $46.20 per hour.

    New employees begin at Step 1 of the pay progression, which is $42.85 hourly. Current City employees' starting rate of pay will be based on Personnel Rules regarding promotions. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) regular position with full benefits. This is a Civil Service position eligible for overtime.
