    Reporting to and partnering with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will set HSSA's financial policy and direction while also being an active participant in, and driver of, the organization's overall strategy. They will lead and be accountable for all financial administration, business planning, high employee engagement and budgeting. As a member of the senior leadership team, the CFO will work closely with a motivated and engaged Finance and Investment Committee (FIC) of the Board of Directors.

    The CFO will lead HSSA's Finance, Information Technology (IT), Facilities, and Thrift Store staff.

    Specific responsibilities include:
    Strategy
    • Partner with the CEO on all operational and strategic issues as they arise; provide strategic recommendations to the CEO based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.
    • Participate in the ongoing strategic planning process as an integral member of the senior management team.
    • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with HSSA's strategic plan.
    • Engage the Chief Development Officer (CDO) to align financial management with short- and long- term financial planning and projections.
    • Engage the Board and FIC around issues, trends, and changes in the operating model and operational delivery.
    Financial and Operational Management
    • Oversee budgeting (including multi-program budgets), and the implementation of budgets, monitor progress and present operational metrics both internally and externally.
    • Ensure that finance staff maintain financial record systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB).
    • Oversee the preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials and metrics for funders and HSSA's board of directors; prepare and communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
    • Manage cash flow, forecasting, and all banking activities; direct all financial, project-based, and departmental accounting, and monitor the use of all funds.
    • Serve as liaison with the investment manager.
    • Coordinate all audit activities, preparation of the annual 990 and all other tax related forms.
    • In coordination with the Director of People and Culture (DPC), investigate and implement cost- effective employee benefit plans with the goal of attracting and retaining qualified individuals. Coordination of the design, implementation, and timely calculations of employee compensation.
    • In coordination with the CDO, coordinate bequest forms and valuations, collections of pledges, etc.
    • Review all formal Finance-, IT-, Facilities and Thrift Store- related procedures, processes, internal controls, best practices, and administration, recommending improvements to the systems in place and managing the systems going forward.
    Team Management
    • Develop and manage direct staff, to include managers in finance, IT, facilities, and the Thrift Store; guide larger multidisciplinary teams outside of direct span of control.
    • Engage other members of the senior management team to build and maintain together a culture of care, equity and inclusion collectively working to keep the focus on quality programming, strategic plan alignment and cross agency collaboration growth.
    • Directly supervise activities of direct reports with the goal of achieving effective operation of all accounting functions; anticipating and meeting HSSA's current and future IT needs; creating a long-term facility maintenance plan including accounting for capital expenditure needs
    • and problem solving of unexpected facility needs; and effective management of retail and thrift operations.
    • Facilitate cross-department collaboration that ensures that all financial, IT, facilities and Thrift Store solutions positively support HSSA's evolving strategy, operational delivery, and data collection needs.
    Provide guidance across all departments on attracting and retaining team members, including best practices for coaching, mentoring, teaching, and professional development.

    Organization
    Celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2024, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) has saved over one million pets since its founding in 1944. HSSA takes in pets from all over Southern Arizona, assisting smaller shelters by taking in hard-to-place pets and pets with serious medical needs - pets who might not otherwise have a chance at life. HSSA is organized around three primary pillars: Shelter & Placement, Prevention and Outreach & Education. HSSA receives over 4,000 dogs, cats, and other animals each year, has an annual operating budget of about $10M, has approximately 130 employees and over 1,000 volunteers. The organization is situated on a beautiful campus featuring a brand-new Education and Behavioral Center, state of the art veterinary clinic, and inviting spaces for humans to meet their new animal companions.

    Position Requirements

    Qualifications
    The CFO will be a highly skilled leader with at least 8-10 years of broad finance experience of increasing responsibility, including experience gathering and evaluating financial information, audit and making actionable recommendations to senior leadership. They will have experience managing finance (accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting), and technology for a nonprofit of similar size. The CFO will have a background in managing employees and bringing positive change to organizations.

    The CFO will have the following experience and attributes:
    • A minimum of a BS in accounting, fnance, or related field; an MBA, MS in Accounting or CPA would be a plus.
    • Highly skilled and proactive, with evidence of having worked as a true business partner to the chief executive.
    • Non-profit experience is required with at least 3 years of CFO experience and 5 years of senior level fnancial experience or a combination of the two with an organization with annual revenues of at least $10 million.
    • Demonstrated excellence in managing finance, accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting requirements.
    • Skill in examining, developing, reengineering, and recommending ?nancial, and technology policies and procedures. Experience implementing a centralized purchasing and cost containment strategy would be a plus.
    • Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting a strategic vision into an operational model.
    • A collaborative and ?exible style, with a strong service mentality. Needs to be seen as a team player who is committed to lifelong learning.
    • A hands-on manager with integrity and a desire to work in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
    • An effective communicator, with strong oral and written skills.
    • Strong commitment to developing team members with demonstrated experience and dedication to coaching, mentoring, and teaching.
    • High emotional intelligence.
    • Demonstrated commitment to animal welfare with a passion for HSSA's mission is essential.
    • Demonstrated commitment to Inclusion, Diversion, Equity and Access (IDEA) principles.
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
    • Proficient in QuickBooks Online, Microsoft Of?ce Suite, and CRM systems.
    • Possession of a valid Arizona driver's license and driving record acceptable to HSSA insurance carrier.
