    About the Position: The Patient Care Technician I role at UPMC Altoona in the 7E Neurology department is a full-time night position with a rotation schedule.

    Are you seeking an opportunity in patient care support to kickstart and advance your healthcare career? UPMC Altoona is in need of a dedicated Patient Care Technician I to assist the 7E Neurology team.


    As a Patient Care Technician with UPMC, you'll play a crucial role in providing quality care to our patients on a daily basis.

    We provide an intensive eight-day training program for eligible entry-level candidates to acquire and showcase the necessary skills to excel as a Patient Care Technician.


    We've recently introduced a Night Program - qualified individuals may be eligible for an extra $2 per hour on top of our existing off-shift differential ($1.10).

    A minimum of 6 months of experience is required to qualify, and a commitment to working full-time night shifts is essential.

    Responsibilities:

    • Demonstrates understanding of how behavior impacts department efficiency.
    • Adheres to safety protocols and procedures, including standard precautions, and is familiar with bloodborne pathogen exposure policies.
    • Ensures timely reporting of equipment malfunctions to the relevant department.
    • Establishes effective communication strategies.
    • Reacts appropriately to emergent situations within the scope of a nursing assistant's role.
    • Takes initiative to enhance knowledge, skills, and performance.
    • Provides feedback to the Registered Nurse on patient care and communicates any changes in patient condition.
    • Strictly follows all policies and practices related to patient care and hospital information.
    • Takes ownership of assignments and views challenges as opportunities for growth.
    • Identifies and communicates learning requirements to the unit manager.
    • Cultivates professional and respectful relationships with colleagues.
    • Maintains a safe environment for patients' well-being and recovery by conducting safety checks, ensuring cleanliness and organization of patient rooms and department, cleaning equipment, changing bed linens, managing linen hampers, keeping hallways clear, and returning equipment.
    • Seeks guidance in planning and prioritizing tasks when necessary. Engages in self-evaluation as requested by the unit manager.
    • Advocates for and supports departmental improvements.
    • Contributes to overall unit operations by responding to calls, delivering meal trays, and assisting with patient transportation.
    • Offers direct patient care under the RN's guidance, including assisting with daily activities such as bathing, feeding, moving, toileting, and walking patients.
    • Procures and distributes supplies and equipment to facilitate patient care delivery, including messenger duties, ordering supplies, charging/correcting inventory, setting up equipment within the nursing assistant's scope, and stocking patient rooms and unit supply areas.
    • Conducts routine tests like blood glucose monitoring, weight measurement, vital sign checks, and input/output monitoring.
    • Receives feedback and instructions constructively.
    • Provides companionship and one-on-one supervision for patients as needed.
    • Handles patient nourishment, refills water pitchers, and distributes patient mail.
    • May assist in applying, monitoring, and removing patient restraints per physician or hospital guidelines. Offers alternative activities to reduce or avoid restraint use.
    • Maintains medical record documentation following established procedures.

    Qualifications:

    Experience Needed:

    • Not required (an 8-day training program will be provided to prepare you for the role)

    Requirements:

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • If no prior hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR completion of the first year of a nursing program's clinical work.
    • Successful finishing of basic information systems training.
    • Experience with microcomputers is advantageous.
    • Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification or enrollment in a relevant program preferred.
    • Access to medications is limited to dispensing them to the nurse.

    Licenses, Certifications, and Clearances:

    • CPR certification as per AHA criteria, including both theoretical and practical components, within 30 days of employment
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • Act 34 clearance
