The Student Academic Advisor plans, develops, implements and manages student advising and affairs activities, including counseling, curriculum, and academic planning services for the Disability Studies IDP and the freestanding minors


Responsibilities include:
(1) Advise the approximately 250 undergraduate majors/minors on policy, procedure and degree requirements, and counseling prospective undergraduate students new first-years and transfers about the major and 4 minors. (2) Direct all related student advisory functions, such as program promotion and summer student orientation, course scheduling and degree auditing. (3) Develop and maintain student involvement in extracurricular activities related to the programs, including outreach and community building efforts with undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, departments, and alumni. (4) In addition to advising majors/minors, the Student Advisor will also manage the approximately 700+ students enrolled in the unit's course offerings annually. (5) Responsible for planning departmental public events, such as speaker events and receptions, commencement activities, undergraduate and graduate new student orientations and events, and award ceremonies. The Student Academic Advisor (SAA) provides instructional planning and administrative support to UEI's interdisciplinary major and minors. This multifaceted work involves supporting the four Chairs and their respective Faculty Advisory Committees (FACs) overseeing the major and minors, faculty from across campus, and UEI directors. The SAA is the primary liaison between students in the programs and the interdisciplinary faculty thus ensuring the academic interests of the students and faculty are represented by both constituents. The incumbent will also serve as a resource to the Assistant Dean of UEI, program Chairs, and UEI Directors, as well as to the FACs by providing statistics and reports, advising on policies and regulations and making program recommendations.

Qualifications

  • 1. Demonstrated skills and experience to counsel and advise students effectively with professional, academic and/or personal questions and concerns. (required)
  • 2. Detailed knowledge of University and College academic rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. (preferred)
  • 3. Three or more years of academic advising experience with persons of various cultural, social economic and educational backgrounds. (preferred)
  • 4. Skill in working independently and following through on duties with mínimal supervision. (required)
  • 5. Demonstrated skill in problem solving and generating alternatives in order to improve operational processes. (required)
  • 6. Ability to organize and conduct group presentations to provide information and explain policies and procedures to various constituencies. (required)
  • 7. Skill in setting priorities that accurately reflects the relative importance of assigned projects and responsibilities. (required)
  • 8. Ability to establish and promote cooperative working relationships. (required)
  • 10. Skill in interacting diplomatically and effectively with students and University partners, including showing discretion, sound judgment and tact in dealing with confidential materials and information. (required)
  • 11. Ability to prepare reports, correspondence, and statistics as required. (required)
  • 12. Must be able to maintain regular schedule and ontime attendance in a hybrid work envrionment. Be able to work evenings and weekends as needed. (required)
