NATURE OF WORK:


This is an entry-level apprentice program involving on-the-job training to learn and perform maintenance and repair work in the facilities management and construction industry.

This position may be required to work weekends and rotating shifts during certain seasons or events. Safety equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, reflective vests, gloves, steel-toed shoes, and other protective equipment is worn. Participation in the apprentice program is not a guarantee of future employment.
Participants will be required to meet increasingly stringent requirements as they advance through
the program. Failure to meet program guidelines in the specified timeframe may result in termination. Maximum duration for participation is two years, dependent on fiscal year funding/operational needs.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

  • Assists with evaluating, makes basic repairs and performs preventative maintenance on various carpentry, plumbing, masonry, HVAC and electrical building systems.
  • Learns and assists with basic finish and rough carpentry tasks including framing of walls, doorways, and windows and installation of trim and millwork; assists with building room additions and new offices in compliance with building codes.
  • Assists with installing paneling, flooring and carpeting; builds and installs shelves, counter tops, cabinets, bookcases, steps, railing, tables, and storage racks.
  • Assists with repairs to concrete or tile sidewalks and patios; mixes, pours, and assists in finishing concrete surfaces; repairs mortar on brick walls and buildings; operates pressure washers to clean the outside of buildings.
  • Learns how to and performs basic plumbing tasks in compliance with plumbing and building codes; assists with installs and repairs of plumbing fixtures such as toilets, sinks, and drinking fountains; assists with repairs or replaces pipes; operates sewer rodders to clean sewer lines; unclogs toilets; cleans and maintains drinking fountains.
  • Assists with winterizing and maintaining exterior parks and building systems that are not oppen year round. Prepares field house restrooms, exterior fountain and irrigation water lines for winter and reopens in the spring.
  • Assists with performing basic preventive maintenance on electric motors; lubricates and adjusts as required; makes minor electric repairs to light fixtures, switches, and sockets.
  • Learns and performs basic preventative maintenance tasks on HVAC equipment such as air conditioning units, cooling towers, heating units (lowpressure steam, forced air, and heat pumps), air compressors, blowers and exhaust fans; changes filters and lubricates parts. Assists other Facilities Maintenance Workers III on major installation or repair projects.
  • Assists with cleaning and maintains the interior and exterior of buildings. Performs custodial tasks as required. Removes snow from walkways and other areas using hand shovel or snow blower. Moves furniture in and out of rooms; sets up tables, chairs and other equipment and supplies for meetings; installs, assembles and disassembles holiday decorations; checks conditions of fire extinguishers; conducts an annual inventory of furniture and office equipment; tests the operation of smoke and heat detectors.
  • Learns how to and helps estimate cost of materials and labor for construction, modification, or repairs to buildings and facilities; records corrections to blueprints or plans as changes occur in structures, equipment, wiring, and plumbing.
  • Drives pickup truck or other City vehicle to job site; unloads hand tools and power equipment from vehicle.
  • May operate forklift, bucket truck, snow equipment and other equipment as assigned or as qualified.
  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks on facilities and equipment as required.
  • May confer with architects, engineers and occupants to determine design requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:


  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
  • Must be willing and able to obtain a Class B or higher CDL with air brakes endorsement within first six months of employment as a term of continued employment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions communicated in English.
  • Must be willing and able to work in a position that is anticipated to end after two years.
  • Ability to perform simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Ability to read and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
