Description

The TB Control Branch (TBCB) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is seeking to hire one graduate student assistant.

Under the general direction of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Medical Epidemiologist, the student will make significant contributions to an analytic project of public health importance.


Core activities will include a combination of:

reviewing and summarizing existing literature, data acquisition, data analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of results necessary to inform statewide TB prevention and control activities.

Through mentorship, the student is expected to develop increasing independence to:

question and improve the analytic approach; identify additional analytic questions and implement the methods to answer those questions; explore biostatistical, economic, and epidemiologic methods to develop and implement the analytic approach; and succinctly communicate progress and mid-stream corrections at weekly meetings with their supervisor.

**Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.


UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period.

UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.

**Prerequisites

Must be a graduate student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Graduate students must be enrolled in at least: four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.

**Majors/Fields of Study
Public Health, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Health Administration, Health Science, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Policy and Management, Infectious Diseases and Immunity, and Global Health

**Work Schedule
F lexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.

**Additional Work Schedule

Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).

**Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of one year of Master of Public Health (M.P.H). coursework in epidemiology, biostatistics, or health economics.
  • Interest in use of data to inform public health practice. Eagerness to learn new analytic methods, as necessary.**Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Statistical Analysis System (SAS), R, or other statistical programming.
  • Familiarity with fundamentals of economic evaluation in public health.
  • Experience analyzing large datasets.

Responsibilities:


  • Review of topic, including pertinent TB control guidelines and studies.
  • Data acquisition and analysis. Draft summary and give oral presentation on findings.**Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.

**Working Conditions
Work is performed in an hybrid environment.

*Graduate students will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI telework agreement.
