This position is for

PRIMARY PURPOSE:


Plan, implement, and evaluate the District's elementary school comprehensive program of guidance, including counseling services in the area of assignment.

Use a planning process to define the needs and priorities of the population served. Provide a proactive, developmental guidance program for all students to maximize personal growth, development, and post-secondary opportunities.


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Education/Certification:_
Master's degree in guidance and counseling Valid Texas counselor's certificate

  • Special Knowledge/Skills:_
Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and preparation for post-secondary opportunities and development

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Ability to speak Spanish preferred

  • Experience_:
Three years of teaching experience


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Program Management


  • Collaborate with school personnel, students, parents, and the community to implement, and promote continuous improvement of a developmental guidance and counseling program.
Guidance/Counseling


  • Plan structured lessons to deliver the Elementary Guidance Curriculum effectively and in accordance with students' developmental needs.
  • Provide guidance to individuals and groups of students that facilitate the development of educational goals and a post-secondary awareness plan.
  • Assist teachers in understanding student behavior and social/emotional needs as they relate to classroom learning.
  • Assist in conferences with teacher-student, teacher-parent, and teacher-student-parent.
  • Use accepted theories and effective techniques to promote the educational, personal, and social development of students.
Coordination/Student Assessment


  • Coordinate people and other resources in the school, home, and community to promote student success.
  • Use an effective process when referring students, parents, and/or others to special programs and services.
  • Interpret test results and other assessment data to guide students in individual goal setting and planning.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in the area of guidance and counseling.

  • Demonstrate professionalism, including a commitment to professional development.
  • Advocate for a school environment that acknowledges and respects diversity.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, parents, and community members.
  • Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the school district.
Student Management


  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with students and parents.
  • Facilitate adjustment of new students to school.
  • Assist students in understanding appropriate behavior and behavior management skills at the elementary school level.
Consultation


  • Consult with school personnel, parents, and other community members to promote understanding of student development, individual behavior, the student environment, and human relationships.
  • Collaboratively provide professional expertise to advocate for individual students and specific groups of students.
  • Adhere to legal standards including school board policies.
  • Adhere to state, district, and campus standards, regulations, and procedures.
  • Shows commitment to current professional standards of competence and practice.
  • Promote and follow ethical standards for school counselors.
  • Demonstrate professional and responsible work habits.
  • Use professional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Perform any other duties assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands:
Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); ability to instruct; maintain emotional control under stress.


Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Exposure to childhood communicable diseases; good general health and stamina needed
