JOB SUMMARY


Discovery Guides are Part-Time, Non-Exempt para-professional educators who facilitate family learning engagement in the Museum's exhibits and through related gallery programs such as school field trips, birthday parties, various demonstrations and themed workshops.

This facilitation includes ensuring that the Museum's policies are upheld, that the exhibits are maintained as needed for visitor interactions, that visitors are safe and receive rapid first aid assistance if needed, and that visitors enjoy their experience at the Museum.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitate guest learning by describing, modeling, and prompting engagement with the Museum's exhibits.
  • Serve as the teaching guide for visiting classrooms, leading students through the curriculum focus set for each exhibit for each age/grade.
  • Enforce CDMOD rules when necessary, and exercise the judgement required to call in management assistance when needed.
  • Always provide excellent customer service and use the judgement needed to diffuse issues with disgruntled visitors or disagreements between visitors.
  • Throughout each day, sanitizes supplies, restores exhibits so they are functioning properly, and callin assistance as needed.
  • Prepare exhibits, as assigned, for opening the Museum to visitors including sanitation. Clean up exhibits for closing to the Museum to include sanitation in the evenings for the following day.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by working special events outside of normal work hours.
  • Wear costumes, uniforms, and other special attire when necessary.
  • Assist with the information desk when necessary, answering questions and taking down requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CEO or Museum Manager, necessary for the Museum.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Associate degree in education or child development preferred or equivalent.
  • Flexible schedule to include some Holidays, weekends, and evenings.
  • Must have a positive, outgoing and wellspoken personality and being able to clearly interact verbally with guests.
  • Knowledge of child development and understanding what is appropriate in terms of education and activities for children of various ages.
  • Knowledge of the various exhibits as well as the activities and functions within each exhibit.
  • Knowledge of CDMOD rules and policies.
  • Must be responsible, dependable, patient, and courteous with guests and other coworkers.
  • Must be able to take direction and complete tasks to accomplish the Museum's goals without the need for managerial followup.
  • Must have professional appearance and grooming.
  • May be required to lift objects weighing more than 25 lbs.
  • Bilingual Preferred
Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Relevant training certifications in educational topics helpful.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
Criminal, Civil background clearance.


PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional, interactive children's museum environment. This role operates within the 3 buildings on property as well as the exterior grounds of the facility.


Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Must possess strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work around exhibits and when necessary to operate a motor vehicle; vision and sight ability to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.

Frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards.

Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, calculator and to operate tools and equipment.

Incumbents in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and inspect work sites.

The ability to lift 25 pounds is necessary for moving material and equipment; carry, push, and pull materials with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.

May work up to 5 days per week; not to exceed 30 hours unless approved by the CEO or Museum Manager.
