- Develop and implement community engagement strategies to increase awareness and utilization of food access and financial support services.
- Provide linkages and referrals to Calfresh, EBT, WIC and public benefits programs.
- Assist with coordination and implementation of weekly food distribution program.
- Support the Coordinator to distribute emergency prepared meals and delivery services for community site partners.
- Work closely with Coordinator and community partners to implement community engagement and education activities.
- Conduct workshops and presentations on food security, food access services, and financial capability.
- Work closely with Community Advisory Board members to support their food advocacy projects.
- Collect and enter service data in an accurate and timely manner.
- Assist in the recruitment and coordination of volunteers and interns.
- Work closely with other service providers at The Unity Council to maintain an integrated service model.
- Participate in subject-matter meetings, advocacy and events as assigned.
- Participate in supervision, agency events and meetings, and join staff-led committees if interested.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
- Minimum two years' experience working in food justice/access, community engagement, financial coaching, social services, or a related field.
- High school diploma or GED, some college coursework is preferred.
- Highly adept at working one-on-one and in group settings with low-income, diverse populations, including immigrants, people of color, seniors, youth, and persons with disabilities.
- Ability to communicate information in a manner that is easy to understand, in groups and individually.
- Experience with completing forms, assembling paperwork, and maintaining organized records.
- Ability to work independently, at a fast pace, and collaboratively with a team and partners.
- Ability to create informational program materials, and outreach materials.
- Strong alignment and consistency with The Unity Council's social equity values, mission and vision.
- Bilingual skills in English and Spanish required.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
- Advanced computer skills with strong MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

The Unity Council is a non-profit Social Equity Development Corporation with a 60-year history in the Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland. Our mission is to promote social equity and improve quality-of-life by building vibrant communities where everyone can work, learn, and thrive.
Our programs aim to provide the community with the tools, knowledge, and resources to transform their lives and ultimately achieve their long-term educational, career, and financial goals. These holistic programs and services reach more than 11,000 individuals and families annually in five languages. Programs include early childhood education, youth mentorship and leadership development, employment services, career readiness training, housing and financial stability, senior citizen services, affordable housing and neighborhood development, and arts and cultural events. Our work expands beyond the Fruitvale district and now reaches across Oakland and into Concord. The Unity Council employs a diverse workforce of more than 340 people who reflect the linguistic, cultural, and ethnic identity of the communities we serve.
Department Summary
The Community Programs department offers a comprehensive suite of integrated services aimed at eliminating barriers to attain and sustain equitable health, social, educational, housing, and economic outcomes. We serve youth, adults, and seniors through services that include: 1) school-based achievement and mentoring in middle and high schools and youth workforce development; 2) food security, housing access, and financial capability; and 3) services dedicated to enhancing the well-being of low-income residents and seniors. We deliver culturally rooted, multi-lingual services, providing vital support to residents in Oakland and throughout Alameda County.
Position Summary
The Community Engagement Specialist will support the community outreach and engagement efforts of the Food Security Program, which seeks to mitigate food insecurity in East Oakland by promoting the use of food and income support services, building community awareness of food justice issues. The Specialist will also be responsible for providing financial coaching, education and enrollment assistance for income support programs; Community Advisory Board recruitment and follow-up, community engagement and outreach to increase utilization of services; support evaluation activities and collect service data.
