Ranger Sergeant


POSITION GOAL:

Supervise law enforcement personnel and operations to deliver district initiatives which support Metroparks strategic plan and to ensure Metroparks exceeds community expectations in delivery of clean, safe, natural parks and services.


CLASSIFICATION:

Hourly - Non-Exempt - Full Time - Year Round


COMPENSATION:

$52,571.00 to $82,974.00 Employer and employee contribute to Public Employee Retirement System


REPORTS TO:

Chief of Rangers


DIRECT REPORTS:

Park Ranger, Deputy Ranger, Officer in Charge, Ranger Trainee


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Supervise daily law enforcement patrols and public service activities for the Park District to maximize the effectiveness of patrol and response to emergency calls.
  • Collect law enforcement data and prepare activity reports assuring compliance with district policies; review and approve law enforcement reports.
  • Assist with the preparation of the annual training schedule for ranger development.
  • Perform and/or oversee law enforcement operations; assist in the investigation of incidents involving injuries and damage on park property or to district property and employees in the performance of their duties.
  • Serve as a community liaison to promote Metroparks role in public safety
  • Serve as the Command Officer as necessary during critical incident operations
  • Provide support and guidance to rangers during law enforcement operations
  • Review and administer SOPs for law enforcement operations; actively evaluates ranger services to ensure continuous improvement. Review and recommend updates to the ranger manuals.
  • Assist in budgeting for ranger department.
  • Perform Field Training Officer sessions.
  • Serve as liaison to the Volunteer Trail Patrol program to actively promote involvement of volunteers and partners to achieve department objectives and provide opportunities for community participation and engagement.
  • Manage the activities of our Honor Guard special detail.
  • Supervise and direct the work of ranger staff; including goal setting, development, and discipline.
  • Manage the security alarm pads for all facilities across the park district
  • Provide communication and assistance to Park Services Supervisors as relates to law enforcement issues.
  • Develop and promote training initiatives.
  • Other park district duties as assigned.

EQUIPMENT USED:


Safety equipment; law enforcement defensive equipment, firearms and restraints; AEDs; patrol bicycles; computers and MS Office software products, mobile data terminal, LEADS and TRAK computers; audiovisual equipment; patrol vehicle.


Requirements:


MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


  • Alternates to the following position requirements may be made as Metroparks finds appropriate and acceptable_

Education:

Associate's degree in Parks and Recreation Services, Natural Resources, or Criminal Justice Service or similar field of study or equivalent work experience.

OPOTA Certification.


Experience:

Seasoned level of leadership experience in law enforcement. Supervisory experience.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Thorough knowledge of procedures, techniques and best practices of law enforcement and public service work.
  • Statistical data collection and reporting skills; strong mathematical skills.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; attention to details.
  • Thorough understanding of Ohio Revised Code, Metropark Rules and Regulations, and applicable Division of Watercraft and Division of Wildlife statutes.
  • Intellectual and analytical abilities to dissect issues, utilize statistics and comparative data, draw conclusions, formulate recommendations, and develop successful strategies.
  • Ability to effectively engage employees through field training exercises, shared leadership, recognition and development opportunities.
  • Community involvement in diverse social, cultural, economic and educational situations; ability to form effective relationships with community organizations and interagency partnerships.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; public presentation skills
  • Customer service and public relations skills
  • Ability to achieve and retain First Aid and CPR/AED certification.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment; excellent conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to become certified as a Field Training Officer

  • Ability to supervise others and direct work of staff and volunteers
  • Computer skills in current technology
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
