Job Summary:


Under the direction and supervision of a behavioral health professional the behavioral health technician provides basic care and oversees the safety and security of mental/behavioral health patients during visits, in group or individual therapy and facilitate their inclusion in the compliance with the established treatment plan.

Demonstrates knowledge of principles and practices of safe care in an outpatient mental health service and uses special spills to deescalate situations for the safety of patients and providers.

Demonstrates knowledge and use of equipment, instruments, procedures, and supplies used in the provision of mental health services. Adheres to strict use of standard precautions and the use of personal protective equipment when applicable. Able to work under pressure and in situations that demand patience, tact, stamina, and endurance. Demonstrates effective service oriented interpersonal skills with providers and coworkers. Enters patient information when appropriate and under direction into the medical record.


OSHA Exposure Classification:

Job Category I. Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which standard precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.


Physical Requirements:


Qualifications, Knowledge & Ability:


  • Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age, High school diploma or equivalent. Degree in related field to behavioral/mental health preferred.
  • May hold certification as C.N.A. or acquired other specific training in basic health and safety within mental/behavioral health care.
  • Aware of behavioral principles and individual responses to stressors
  • Current CPI certification or equivalent preferred
  • PRN employees must have a minimum of 1year related experience as a mental health technician.
  • Certification in Crisis intervention and/or management of the violent patient preferred.
  • Must hold and maintain BLS certification.
  • Ability to relate and work effectively with others with respect and dignity in the challenging environment.
  • Demonstrated skills in verbal and written English communications for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards.
  • Willingness to participate in goalsetting and educational activities for own professional advancement.
  • Previous experience is preferred.
  • Is aware of standard of mental/behavioral health and performs in accordance with them.
