Position Summary and Job Duties:


Perform responsible and various tasks requiring different levels of complexity for the office of County Treasurer in accordance with state statutes, county ordinances and local municipal rules, regulations and policies. Responsible for collecting, receipting and depositing money from County departments and from individual real estate tax payers on a daily basis. This position is directly responsible for the office's duty of maintaining district tax rolls for local governmental units and for maintaining the history of real estate tax payments for property owners.

80% Perform responsible and various tasks requiring different levels of complexity for the County Treasurer's office:

  • Ability to perform a variety of clerical duties including cash handling skills and inputting cash payments into a receipting system.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office machines including an adding machine, computer, printer, fax machine, check scanner, and typewriter.
  • Knowledge of the functions and duties of the office of County Treasurer Chapters 70 and 74 Wisconsin Statutes.
  • Provide general information and answer questions related to real estate, personal property and assessment data to government officials.
  • Knowledge of office management, record keeping and bookkeeping.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with fellow workers and the public.

20% Perform related work as required and for the Real Property Lister preparing the tax bills. Knowledge of MS Excel including sorting, formulas and formatting of databases.

Success Factors (KSA's):


  • Ability to accurately maintain a cash drawer, which could contain a large sum of money.
  • Ability to enter large amounts of money into a receipting system correctly.
  • Ability to compile and maintain records and submit payments as required by State Statutes.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in oral, written and electronic forms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow workers and the public.
  • Ability to perform assigned functions with a minimum of error.
  • Ability to enter data at an acceptable rate of speed.
  • Knowledge of local government entities, local policies and procedures and related State Statutes.
  • Knowledge and use of computers, computer programs and data import methods.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise judgment and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of the assessment and taxation process.
  • Knowledge of real estate descriptions and terms.
  • Ability to research and analyze real estate records.
  • Ability to read legal descriptions.
  • Knowledge of computerized record keeping.
  • Ability to perform advanced mathematical skills.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.

Job Requirements, Education, Training & Experience:

  • Graduation from high school including or supplemented by coursework in bookkeeping and keyboarding.
  • Three (3) years responsible office experience that includes clerical or bookkeeping duties.
  • Previous banking and cash handling experience.
  • Computer experience including Word, Excel and data entry.
  • Involvement with a wide variety of real estate documents, real estate assessments and real estate tax bills preferred.
  • Vacations are not allowed during specific months of the year.

Equipment Use:


  • Ability to operate a computer and computer keyboard efficiently and accurately.
  • Familiar with the use of other types of office equipment such as printer, copy machine, fax machines, adding machine/calculator, etc.

Working Conditions:


  • Almost all work indoors.
