GENERAL PURPOSE
Operating a variety of heavy equipment and vehicles safely and efficiently to transport
materials and supplies to complete work assignments.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general guidance and direction of the sanitation Supervisor.

None

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operates heavy equipment, such as Stationary and mobile grappler cranes, frontloading
compactor truck, hydraulic lift vehicles (Bobcat), walking floor conveyor
- systems, 18 Wheel Tractors and open-top solid waste transport trailers and weight
- scale systems and open-bed trash truck with cherry picker.
  • Maintains reports and records related to the collection and transport of solid waste.
  • Maintains a Type 5 Processing Facility (Transfer Station)
  • Collects solid waste from schools, commercial businesses, industrial establishments,
and apartment buildings.- Transport and Disposal of sewage sludge generated by municipal wastewater

treatment plant using Tilt-Frame Vehicle.- Collection of bulky items such as large appliances, furniture, tree stumps and limbs.

  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and
refers needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.

  • PERIPHERAL DUTIES
  • Assist in other assignments as assigned. Assists in the training of lower classified employees
- to increase their skills. Required to operate rear-loading compaction vehicles.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
Graduation with high school education or GED equivalent. Four (4) years of experience
relating to Solid Waste management. Ability to perform heavy driving tasks for extended
periods. Ability to work within time constrains; ability to communicate effectively both

verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other departments and the public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.


Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


Considerable knowledge of Sanitation related equipment, methods and procedures used in Direct-Dump processing and waste truck transfer and hauling operation.

Knowledge of compaction methods. Ability to estimate travel distance and time, and routes taken, traffic conditions and speed limits. Some knowledge of type I and type IV landfill operations.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have a valid Texas State Class A or B commercial Driver's License (CDL) and comply
with the city of Deer Park's policy on driving. Knowledge of maximum legal pay loads and
tare weights governed by state regulations for gross vehicle weight and axle weight. And
limitations on length, width, and height of the large-volume trailers and/or rigs.


TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including pickup truck, mobile radio, shovels and some small hand tools.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The position requires stooping, climbing, bending and balance. The employee is required to stand, talk or hear. Required to use hands to handle and/or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT
There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution.
The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
