    Central Lines Technician II - Ocala, United States - City of Ocala, FL

    Description
    This is a skilled and mechanical position that involves installing, cleaning, testing, and repairing water meters.

    Participates in and leads others while installing and repairing water mains, water services, fire hydrants, sewer mains, sewer laterals, manholes, force mains and valves.

    Report to Department Director or Designee.

    Examples of Duties

    Field Work Installs and/or changes out water meters of various sizes. Cleans or replaces meter boxes. Repairs meter leaks. Cut water off/on for customer and other departments. Lower, extend and install sewer laterals. Repairs manholes by adjusting to grade, and rehabilitation. Ability to repair any size of force main and understand the proper procedures for clean up of sewer spills. Ability to excavate the lateral by hand or by using a backhoe. Repair water leaks and point repair of sewer laterals. Repairs, installs, replaces and relocates abandoned lines and hydrants. Ensures that safety practices and procedures are consistently followed.

    Ability to use the sewer Vac-Con Truck to clean sewer mains, lift station wet wells, and assist water and sewer coworkers during emergency repairs.

    Ability to use the backhoe, trencher and operate a boom truck. Exercises, repairs, replaces and installs water valves. Reads maps and assists with locates when needed.

    Customer Service Conducts flow and pressure tests in the field on meters and on-line service to the customer's homes. Responsible for good customer communication and service at job site. Completes flow tests on fire hydrants. Ability to perform dye testing, smoke testing and televising mains and laterals. Communicates clearly and politely to assist customers in person and by phone. Interacts with other employees and uses a two-way radio.

    Record Keeping Creates Meter Shop work orders on new and completed work. Logs and inputs information of Meter Shop completed work orders into the computer. Does monthly report from information in computer. Bench tests small meters. Provides input and recommendations to supervisor regarding safety and training needs. Prepares and completes construction reports and daily time sheets. Uses PC to update spread sheets and database.

    Radio Communication Is responsible for relaying information from customers to field personnel, i.e., locates, water leaks, sewer spills, etc. Also assists field personnel via radio with questions from out in the field.

    Maintenance:
    Completes routine service and maintenance to Service trucks, tools and equipment.

    Standby Performs standby service on a regular rotating basis to complete emergency repairs.

    Training:
    Attends various training classes offered internally or from an outside source.

    Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications


    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    High school, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area; E.G. data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation, etc, plus 3 years related experience and/or training. Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    Must possess minimum of "3" certification in Water Distribution and a "C" in Sewer Collection. Obtain a minimum of "2" certification in Water Distribution and a B" in Sewer Collection within a 36-month period.

    Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Operators Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

    Within six months of employment/promotion, must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Drivers License, Class "B" with tanker endorsement.

    Must have CDL permit by first day of employment and obtain CDL license within 6 months of hire.


    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
    Must reside within 45 minutes of City Hall (151 SE Osceola Avenue) using Map Quest.

    COMMUNICATION SKILLS


    Ability to read a limited number of words and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers; Ability to write and speak simple sentences as a means for basic communication.

    Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, notes, letters and memos; Ability to write simple correspondence.

    Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

    Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Ability to perform these mathematical skills using money and other forms of measurement.

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

    Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.


    SUPERVISION RECEIVED


    Under general supervision where standard practice enables the employee to proceed alone on routine work, referring all questionable cases to supervisor.

    Considerable responsibility with regard to general assignments in planning time, method, manner, and/or sequence of performance of own work; may also occasionally assist in the planning of work assignments performed by others within a limited area of operation.

    Errors might possibly go undetected for a considerable period of time, thereby creating an inaccurate picture of an existing situation.
