    Opportunity for Apprenticeship


    This is semi-skilled work in constructing, installing, maintaining and repairing of water mains, water services, fire hydrants, sewer mains, sewer laterals, manholes, force mains and valves.

    Report to Department Director or Designee.

    Examples of Duties


    Constructing and installing water and sewer mains and service lines: Assists in extending sewer and water mains to supply residential or commercial customers.

    Assists in the installation of Fire Hydrants.


    Completes repairs and maintains water and sewer mains and service lines: Repairs or replaces damaged manholes, sewer mains, sewer laterals and valves throughout the City.

    Completes repairs of water mains and service lines. Repairs or replaces damaged fire hydrants. Makes taps on water mains and sewer gravity mains.

    Equipment:
    Uses valve exercising equipment. Use or assist the backhoe, trencher, vac truck and crane truck operator. Uses pumps, concrete mixer, arrow board, air compressor, street saw and pneumatic or plate tamp.

    Safety Practices:
    Ensures work sites are safe by using proper advanced warning signs, cones and other safety equipment. Follows all safety policies and/or procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

    Maintenance:
    Completes routine service and maintenance to Service trucks, tools and equipment.

    Training:
    Attends various training classes offered internally or from an outside source.

    Radio Communication:
    Is responsible for relaying information from customers to field personnel, i.e., locates, water leaks, sewer spills, etc. Also assists field personnel via radio with questions from out in the field.

    Maintains records and log books.

    Standby Performs standby service on a regular rotating basis to complete emergency repairs.

    Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications


    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


    High school diploma or GED required, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area, E.G.

    data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation, etc., plus 2 years related experience and/or training. Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Operators Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.


    Must obtain a minimum of a "C" in Sewer Collections and a "3" in Water Distribution within a 12-month period.


    Within six months of employment/promotion, must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class "B" with tanker endorsement.

    Must have CDL permit by first day of employment and obtain CDL license within 6 months of hire.


    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
    Must reside within 45 minutes of City Hall (110 SE Watula Avenue) using Map Quest.

    Ability to read a limited number of words and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers; Ability to write and speak simple sentences as a means for basic communication.

    Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, notes, letters and memos; Ability to write simple correspondence.

    Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Ability to perform these mathematical skills using money and other forms of measurement.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED
    Under immediate supervision, performs general assignments of work, with periodic check of performance by supervisor.

    Limited responsibility with regard to general assignments in planning time, method, manner, and/or sequence of performance of own work operations.

    Performs work operations which permit frequent opportunity for decision-making of minor importance and which would not only affect the operating efficiency of the individual involved, but would also affect the work operations of other employees and/or clientele to a slight degree.

    Errors would require a moderate amount of time to correct.

    Regular contacts with patrons where the contacts are initiated by the employee. Involves both furnishing and obtaining information and, also, attempting to influence the decisions of those persons contacted.

    Contacts of considerable importance and of such nature, that failure to exercise proper judgment may result in important tangible or intangible losses to the organization.
