CARNEY HOSPITAL
The Phlebotomist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients ranging in age from infancy, throughout adolescence, adulthood and geriatrics.
The Phlebotomist must possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's age, and interpret the appropriate information required to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and inform physician of such.
Responsibilities & StandardsPhlebotomists are required to interact correctly and make an accurate identification of the patient 100% of the time:
Responsible for being award of hospital, laboratory and phlebotomy policies and procedures as they relate to patient contact.
Ability to approach and identify patients correctly in a professional and courteous manner, 100% of the time.
Identify him/herself to the patient, give an explanation why they are there and outline the phlebotomy procedure.
Refer the patient to nursing or medical staff with inquires regarding blood tests.
Refers all medical emergencies to appropriate medical staff 100% of the time.
Collection of blood samples for routine testing by venipuncture or capillary puncture on inpatients and outpaitnets as ordered by a physician:
Phlebotomist must possess the ability to assess data, interpret the appropriate information to identify each patients requirements relative to the patients age specific needs from infancy, throughout adolescence, adulthood and geriatrics.
Correctly assemble, use and dispose of related equipment.Perform venipuncture and puncture as directed by policy/procedures manual and orientation.
- Perform bleeding time tests on inpatients and outpatients ordered by physicians as outlined by policy/procedure manual and as demonstrated during orientation:
- Correct technique is used for collection of blood cultures by venipuncture as ordered by a physician using a syringe or blood collection set as outlined in laboratory policy/procedure manuals and as demonstrated during orientation:
Use of blood collection sets so as to enhance the blood collection process with mínimal discomfort to the patient.
- Performance of glucose tolerance tests according to directions in the laboratory policy/procedure manual and orientation:
Evaluates fasting blood sugar results and notifies the immediate supervisor if results exceeds limits in laboratory policy/procedure manual.
Immediate notification of a supervisor if a reaction is identified 100% of the time.
- Ability to operate the laboratory computer in a fashion which will allow for the entering of patient data, making specimen labels, and retrieval of patient information:
Performs routines required to test request, verify specimen collection and reschedule blood work when needed.
- Specimen processing/handling/distribution:
Distributes all specimens to the appropriate laboratory.
Identifies specimens with special handling instructions and processes them as directed by laboratory policy/procedure manual and as directed by immediate supervisor.
- Communications:
Answers both voice and electronic pages in a timely manner.
Informs nursing staff of patients who need to be rescheduled, redrawn, or drawn by a physician in a courteous timely manner as directed by laboratory policy/procedure manual or as directed by immediate supervisor.
- Laboratory safety:
Maintains universal precautions with no incidences of failure.
