Continental Maritime of San Diego, a Titan company, is a certified Master Ship Repair Contractor for the U.S. Navy. Our skilled professionals have performed hundreds of ship repairs for the Navy and Military Sealift Command.

CMSD does repair on all types of major surface vessels including CVN, CG, and DDG, and all types of amphibious ships including LHD, LHA, LSD, LPD, and auxiliary ships.

Our work also includes repairs and alterations to a wide range of Combatant, Hull, Mechanical and Electrical, and Habitability Systems.

Position Specifics
Continental Maritime of San Diego is currently seeking a Shipyard Competent Person to help support our operations. The Shipyard Competent Person (SYCP) is an essential member of the company's health and safety program.

The position requires a comprehensive understanding of all regulatory requirements associated with industrial activities pertaining to hot work and work occurring in confined and enclosed spaces.

The SYCP must ensure the work area is safe by performing atmospheric testing and physical hazard assessments based on the work scope and additional requirements identified by NFPA Certified Marine Chemist.

Minimum Qualifications:

An initial 3Day SYCP Certificate from an NFPA Certified Maine Chemist and current OSHA 10hour training
Possesses the ability to recognize situations that constitute a change of conditions requiring a NFPA certified Marine Chemist
Able to calibrate and troubleshoot a five gas atmospheric gas detector
Must be able to perform evaluation and testing in various environments including but not limited to noise, illumination, atmospheric conditions (confined spaces), ensuring proper working environments are established and maintained and have familiarity with US Naval Shipboard spaces and navigation identified as a "bullseye"
US Citizenship if required
The ability to acquire a DBIDS credential is required
Capable of working in a variety of physically demanding environments and weather conditions. This includes climbing, bending, crawling, working at heights, inside of enclosed and confined spaces, heat, rain, wind, etc.
Must be able to work any shift
Minimum of 3 years of experience working in confined spaces, with one of those years having SYCP involvement

Physical Requirements

Exposure to fumes, irritants, laser light, toxic chemicals, and potential electric shock in an industrial or shipboard environment
May involve gathering data while observing rotating or operating machinery
Requires working in an industrial or shipboard environment. Will require excessive walking, standing, navigating up and down narrow ladders/stairs and steep ramps
Normally not required to lift more than 40 pounds higher than three feet/floor level. May need to lift more than 40 pounds to waist level.
May encounter rapid changes in microclimates, industrial processes, and other environmental factors while collecting data, providing direction, and observing performance of task teams.
