    Description
    Responsible for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the management and preventive care of patients with complex/advanced cardiopulmonary problems and/or performing pulmonary function, metabolic, and exercise tests/studies and assisting physicians with bronchoscopies, bedside and in the laboratory. Additionally, responsible for the calibration and maintenance of equipment and documenting procedures and recording results.
    Education
  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy from an AMA approved school of Respiratory Therapy required
    • Experience
  • 1 -3 years required as a Licensed Respiratory Therapist required
    • Licenses and Certifications
  • Current Certification or Registry by the National Board for Respiratory Care and must maintain an active license by the District of Columbia to practice Respiratory Care. Required
  • Performs airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Serves as a respiratory system consultant to other therapists, physicians, nurses.
  • Performs:
  • a. EKG's
  • b. Pulmonary function tests
  • c. Bronchoscopies.
  • d. Hemodynamic and physiologic monitoring.
  • e. Procures arterial blood gas samples
  • Sets up and restocks bronchoscopy carts for ICU's.
  • Calibrates and performs quality control on laboratory equipment.
  • Performs the duties of the Respiratory Therapy General Practitioner (RCP I).
  • a. Participates in the formulation and implementation of the respiratory care plan and implements and maintains records of the plan. Revises protocol as necessary.
  • b. Conducts bedside diagnostic studies and procedures; informs the appropriate medical personnel of the results and recommends a course of treatment.
  • c. Performs medical gas administration and aerosol therapy, Administers medication including Pentamedine via nebulization as directed by physician.
  • d. Conducts chest physical therapy (including bronchopulmonary drainage and exercises).
  • e. Documents therapy/tests in hand held, portable computer and then uploads the information into the department's computer. Charts therapy/response(s) as appropriate.
  • f. Responds to emergencies/codes, maintaining the airway as necessary.
  • g. Performs troubleshooting on ventilators.
  • Tests and evaluates new equipment.
  • Schedules patients for procedures in the laboratory. Obtains patient registration and billing information for studies and enters charges upon delivery of service(s).
  • Participates in the orientation of new hires to the department and WHC.
