Summary of Job:


The City of Verona, Department of Public Works is recruiting for a Lead Water Operator The Lead Water Operator position is responsible for performing all tasks involving the installation, repair, maintenance and operations of the City of Verona's potable water treatment, storage, and distribution system.

This is a specialized position to assure safe drinking water for the residents and businesses within the City of Verona.

This position reports to the Public Works Utility Superintendent and designated management staff.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Examples of the specific tasks of the Lead Water Operator include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Monitor chemical feed and other system components.
  • Monitor effectiveness of treatment.
  • Prepare and maintain records of meter readings, tests, equipment, chemical use, correspondence and customer complaint log.
  • Regularly read meters and gauges, making adjustments as needed.
  • Periodically flush distribution system using hydrants and valves.
  • Conduct daily system and security inspections.
  • Attend training to meet state primacy agency's continuing education requirements.
  • Create and follow standard operating procedures.
  • Complete monthly Pumpage and Chemical Usage Reports and submit them electronically to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
  • Perform underground service (all City asset's) alert locating, marking and notification per Digger's Hotline requests.
  • Schedule and collect water samples to comply with the Safe Water Drinking Standards and report the results to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
  • Resolve any compliance problems and report analytical results to regulators as required.
  • Report findings from routine inspections and scheduled maintenance. Provide input for planning and preparing of equipment replacement for budget cycles
  • Maintain records for all maintenance activities of the Water Utility System.
  • Maintain and oversee maintenance schedule for all assets of the Water Utility System.
  • Perform all work functions in an efficient manner while maintaining the highest quality service possible, and while following the proper procedures for workplace safety.
  • Perform any other related duties that are not listed here that may be required for this position, or as assigned by the Public Works Street Superintendent, Assistant Director of Public Works, and / or the Director of Public Works.
  • Coordinate and accompany the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Water Supply Engineer with the three (3) year Sanitary Survey Inspection of all Public Water Facilities and records.
  • Take corrective action of any deficiencies found in the three (3) year Sanitary Survey and provide the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources a written response of the correction taken.
  • Coordinate the five (5) Year annual inspection for Elevated Storage Tanks and Ground Water Reservoirs and submit the reports to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
  • Oversee and train Water Operators of day to day operations, materials, equipment and practices used to provide safe potable water to City Water Customers.
  • Oversee and train Water Operators the operation of the SCADA system, pumping equipment and pumping equipment telemetry.
  • Oversee utility maintenance staff as necessary to ensure successful operation of the water utility.
  • Oversee, maintain, and obtain the knowledge for all well houses, booster stations, storage tanks, and distribution system.
  • Oversee and maintain maintenance schedule and activities included in the master service maintenance agreement for the elevated storage tanks.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


The Lead Water Operator must possess the following:

  • Ability to self-manage, understand and develop critical path scheduling.
  • Ability to oversee and train employees with lesser experience of methods, materials and practices used in water system operations.
  • Ability to oversee and train employees with lesser experience and knowledge of the SCADA system.
  • Ability to oversee and train employees with lesser experience and knowledge of all pumping equipment and telemetry.
  • Knowledge of the safety precautions required to perform duties.
