    SUMMARY

    Skilled in performing a variety of tasks to include constructing, installing, maintaining and repairing water distribution systems and/or storm drainage systems lines/mains and to operate related equipment. Servicing water and wastewater meters and provide customer service.

    This position may require you to have a take-home vehicle for purposes of responding to departmental emergency situations. An employee is covered under the County's auto insurance policy when operating the vehicle in the scope of his or her employment. Employees are encouraged to purchase a rider of endorsement to their personal automobile policy to provide coverage for operating a County vehicle for personal use including driving to and from work.

    In the event of a natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee may be required to perform emergency duties as directed.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES / KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AMD ABILITIES

    Perform manual work involving construction, maintenance, inspection and repair of wastewater systems and/or water distribution systems to maintain integrity of the water system and to maintain quality and sufficient pressure of water provided to customers.

    Perform work orders involving new account setup, account terminations, and installations.

    Responds to customer complaints and work orders involving high bills, low water pressure, water leaks, complaints of flooding, sink holes, clogged inlets, or other situations; investigates problems/complaints, identifies location of problems, and initiates necessary repairs; reports problems to supervisor.

    Perform various tasks associated with water utility construction/maintenance projects as assigned, which may include repair of washouts, swales, removing debris from inlets and control structures, laying sod, maintaining pump stations, locating water mains and meter boxes, repairing water main breaks, tapping water mains, cutting pipes, reading water meters, repairing/maintaining fire hydrants, flushing hydrants, painting hydrants, repairing/maintaining valves, removing/patching concrete/asphalt, cleaning out meter boxes, pumping water from meter boxes, maintaining pumps/saws, removing pest/rodents from, meter areas, trimming/pruning shrubs/trees around meter boxes, cutting grass, digging/removing dirt/debris from meter boxes, digging ditches/trenches, compacting soil, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, or setting up traffic/safety barricades/cones in work zones.

    May perform illustrative duties required in the Utilities Service Worker description.

    Monitor water quality (color, odor, bacteria, chlorine) through routine dead-end flushing and sampling.

    Polices water system to ensure its integrity is not breached, i.e., illegal connection, unannounced construction on or near water lines, etc.

    Monitors irrigation usage to ensure that County Ordinance #413, pertaining to water conservation, is adhered to by residents.

    Responds to stoppage calls.

    Reads blueprints and as-built drawing to locate and verify pipe sizing for water and wastewater lines and manholes.

    Operate a variety of machinery, equipment and tools used in department projects/activities, which may include a utility truck, bobcat, backhoe, dump truck, tractor, tamper/compactor, tap machine, metal detector, handheld computerized meter reading device, meter tester, valve key, air compressor, pneumatic tools, generator, pump, saw, snap cutter, chipping hammer, power tools, shovel, yard /hand tools plumbing tools, mechanic tools, or radio communications equipment.

    Transports, leads and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects or at work sites.

    Perform general maintenance tasks which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.

    Monitor inventory of division equipment and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new/replacement materials.

    Follow safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees, the public and other individuals.

    Prepare or complete various forms, reports, correspondence, service/work orders, time sheets, overtime logs, or other documents.

    Maintain records of work orders and other documentation.

    Communicate via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; records/replays messages; responds to requests for service or assistance.

    Communicate with supervisor, employees, other departments, customers, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

    Provide response to after-hours calls or to emergency situations.

    Performs work related to this job description as required, and assistance to other employees or departments as needed.

    Knowledge of the effective operation of equipment as required for the position.

    Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and precautionary measures necessary to avoid accidents.

    Knowledge of different types of pipes and repair clamps.

    Ability to understand and carry out general instructions related to construction and maintenance operations including reading blueprints.

    Ability to work effectively without close supervision and to make decisions where applicable, pertaining to work problems.

    Ability to provide information and answer customers' questions in an effective and courteous manner.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Must possess a High school diploma or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and two (2) years' experience in the maintenance and repair of utilities infrastructure associated with water production, water reclamation, or utilities collection and distribution systems (depending on area of assignment).

    Additional qualifying education and/or experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted one for the other on a year for year basis.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

    Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License

    Must possess Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Certification within twelve (12) months of appointment.
