Reports To:Deputy Executive Director**
Location:Washington, DC**As the nonprofit partner of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), The National Archives Foundation (NAF), generates financial and creative support and public awareness for exhibitions, public programs, capital projects, strategic partnerships and civic and educational initiatives.

Position Scope and Responsibilities


The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of the Foundation's marketing strategies, communications, partnership outreach, and public relations activities.

This position directs the efforts and manages the Marketing Manager and the Communications and Partnership staff, coordinating with all NAF departments to ensure marketing and communications activities align.


Primary Responsibilities

General

  • Leads development of NAF's annual Marketing & Communications strategic plan to cover primary initiatives such as, programs, exhibits, events, fundraising appeals, retail marketing, and mission impact
  • Responsible for the achievement of the goals and objectives of the Marketing and Communications Annual Plan
  • Ensures that systems are in place to measure metrics, and reports progress to the NAF leadership
  • Develops annual budgets with Finance for marketing & communications, monitors progress, assure adherence, and evaluates performance
  • Manages and stewards organizational partnerships including those that support marketing and fundraising goals
  • Manages public relations firm(s) and coordinates communications strategy/messaging with National Archives communications department
  • Evaluates market research and develops membership marketing strategies to meet changing conditions
  • Collaborates with the Director of Retail to maximize sales marketing and consumer growth of archives for online store

Brand Management

  • Ensure that brand identity, messaging and marketing and communications strategy are infused in all organizational efforts and adherence to style and social media standards presence is met
  • Manage communications and marketing staff to ensure growth of social media outreach and print materials and other collateral are accurate and salient to audiences
  • Oversee the development, design, distribution, and maintenance of highquality print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to annual reports, brochures, newsletters, invitations, direct mail appeals, signage, and other promotional material as needed
  • Ensure photo database is properly maintained
  • Manage NAF website, ensuring content is updated regularly and maintenance processes are upheld and revised as needed
  • Work with various departments to ensure timely updates to online information
  • Perform biannual website audit to ensure live information is current and up to date and old content is removed/archived as necessary

Media

  • Responsible for the organization's press outreach, including messaging in press releases, creation of press kits and materials, interview preparation, and responses to media requests
  • Develop close partnerships with members of the media
  • Collaborate with NAF partners to maximize press opportunities

Development

  • Collaborates with Development team on Annual Fund Communications to ensure fundraising goals are met and adapt as needed
  • Coordinates Annual Giving Program and donor benefit communications and renewal processes
  • Oversee direct mail strategy to ensure impactful appeals are integrated across channels, delivered on time, and fundraising goals are met

Partnerships

  • Work with the Deputy Executive Director to develop an annual strategic outreach plan for NAF partnerships
  • Oversee partnership database and annual plan to ensure successful stewardship of NAF partners
  • Collaborate with partner organizations on proposed programming, social media content, and other outreach/engagement strategies, and delegate management of collaboration to appropriate staff
  • Continue to find relevant ways to engage existing NAF partners in new and upcoming initiatives

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred in the areas of communications and marketing related field (e.g. marketing, business administration, management, advertising, journalism, and/or communications)
  • Minimum 5 years in an executive communications role at a nonprofit, association, or corporation required
  • Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience required
