Job Summary
Under direct supervision, the plant helper's primary responsible is to assist in operating the wastewater treatment/processing facilities and machinery in specialized manual and mechanical work.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists in the general maintenance and operation of wastewater treatment plant, including cleaning and maintaining equipment, tanks, filter beds, and other work areas
- Inspect equipment and monitor operating conditions, meters, and gauges
- Collects water and wastewater samples as directed/Collect and test water and sewage samples, using test equipment and color analysis standards
- Operate and adjust controls on equipment to purify and clarify water, process or dispose of sewage
- Add chemicals, such as ammonia, chlorine, and lime, to disinfect and deodorize water and other liquids
- Loads and unloads supplies and chemicals from trucks, tankers, and other transport containers
- Assists operators and mechanics in the cleaning and repair of tanks, basins, reservoirs, and associated equipment
- Informs supervisor of all problems, deviations, hazards, unfamiliar situations, and all work activities
Safety Requirements, Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time
- Employee is regularly required to use hand to fingers, handle, feel and operate objects,tools or controls
- Standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and walking on uneven, wet and slick surfaces
- Frequent lifting, climbing, pulling, pushing and bending
- Frequent reaching overhead
- Must be able to frequently lift up to 50 lbs., frequently
- Vision abilities required include close, distance, peripheral and color vision
- Repetitive movements that may include wrists, hands of fingers
- Frequently operate truck valves, hoses and connection tools requiring gross and finemotor skills
- Frequently ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding or catwalks
- PPE REQUIRED
- Varied weather working in hot, cold and wet conditions
- Exposure to dirt, odors, noise or similar elements
- Frequent exposure to caustic chemicals
- Frequently working around moving machinery/equipment (press, forklift, backhoe)
- Possible exposure to confined spaces
- MUST BE CERTIFIED
Minimum Requirements
Education and/or Professional Designation:
High school graduate or equivalent
Experience:
Six months experience in wastewater plant, preferred
Language Skills
- Ability to learn jobrelated materials primarily through oral instruction and observation
- Understand and follow written and oral directions in the English language
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- General knowledge of hazards involved in wastewater treatment and the safety requirements for handling chlorine and like chemicals.
- General knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work
- General understanding of operation of treatment equipment, including pumps, motors, aeration equipment, chlorinators, and related equipment used in the treatment processes
- Ability and willingness to learn to read, record, and interpret meters, charts, graphs, drawings, plans, laboratory reports, operation, and maintenance manuals
- Ability and willingness to learn to troubleshoot the process and equipment used in these programs
- Ability and willingness to learn to analyze mechanical problems and take corrective action

- Wastewater: 1 year (preferred)
