As the Painter Supervisor, you will plan the use of personnel, materials, and equipment required for painting, pavement striping, vehicle body repair, and sign fabrication projects at Washington Dulles International Airport.Painter Supervisor II
Serves in the Paint Section of the Structures and Grounds Division of the Airport Maintenance Department at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).
Supervises the Paint Shop, Vehicle Body Shop, and Sign Shop; plans and directs all airport painting activities. Performs related functions.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans and assigns work schedules. Plans shift changes, as needed.
Determines priorities based on work order designation (routine, rush, or emergency).
Consults with requester to determine scope of work and materials needed.
Plans and estimates materials and personnel needed and estimates costs for each project. Initiates purchase requests for materials and supplies.
Provides input for annual Division budget preparation.
Provides explanation of work to be accomplished and ensures availability of materials and equipment.
Reviews work in progress and assists with unusual problems.
Ensures that safety equipment and procedures are used. Reviews work for compliance with Environmental Protection Agency, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules.
Provides on-the-job training for new employees.
Participates on panels to rate job applications for vacant positions. Evaluates performance and determines training needs. Recommends promotions.
Plans leave schedules, approves leave requests, and maintains time and attendance reports.
Maintains records on preventive maintenance, inventory, expenditures, and other records.
Serves as contact with manufacturers' representatives concerning equipment purchases.
May perform journey-level painting work.
May substitute for Division Manager in their absence.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Six years of progressively responsible experience in painting.
Knowledge of supervisory principles and ability to manage the operations and programs of the unit/team.
Full performance (journey) level knowledge of and skill in the painting trade to plan, assign, perform, and inspect a wide range of work in painting interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, pavement, and vehicles.
Knowledge of accepted painting practices and materials and ability to perform, plan, assign, and oversee painting activities.
Knowledge of accepted vehicle body repair practices and materials and ability to perform, plan, assign, and lead body repair activities.
Knowledge of Federal and state regulations for airfield runways and public roads to ensure layout of precise pavement markings.
Skill in interpreting drawings, specifications, and blueprints to identify painting needs and plan projects in a cost effective manner.
Skill in using tools and equipment of the trade and providing on-the-job training in using the tools and equipment.
Knowledge of the safety rules, regulations, and procedures needed to supervise others in working safely.
Ability to analyze data and information (including blueprints and schematics).
Ability to speak and write effectively.
Skill in using a computer and computerized work order and time and attendance systems.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of striping procedures and equipment.
Experience in automotive painting or repair.
Licensed as a Class B Commercial Driver (CDL).
EDUCATION
A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED
A state driver's license in good standing.
A Class B CDL within 90 days of hire, promotion, or placement into the job.
NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS
Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quantity, quality, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.
Operates vehicle airside and landside (requires AOA permit).
Work requires moderate to heavy physical exertion (lifting objects up to 50 pounds). May stand, bend, stoop, crouch, and work with arms raised overhead or work on ladders and scaffolding.
May be subject to potential hazards common to the airport environment and painting industry. Wears personal protective gear, as necessary.
Is subject to hold-over and recall on a 24-hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal.
