Job Purpose:

The Head of Labor and Employee Relations is responsible for leading the Labor Relations and Employee Relations functions for the company.

This role has a significant emphasis on Labor Relations.

You will work closely with senior leadership and labor unions to negotiate collective bargaining agreements that are acceptable to both the company and the labor union.

Additionally, you will oversee Employee Relations at the company. The role is responsible for a variety of employee policies and ensures confidential employee issues/concerns are investigated and resolved.


The Head of Labor and Employee Relations will work to create a positive relationship between the company, labor unions, and our employees - all of which affects employee retention, satisfaction, and productivity.

This position reports to the Chief Human Resources Officer.

**While the role is remote, preferred location would be in the Midwest or Central Time Zone.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership for the Labor/Employee Relations team and oversee enterprise employee policies.
  • Assist in developing, administering, and directing an effective labor/employee relations program.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive labor relations strategy aligned with the company's mission and values.
  • Make recommendations to management on labor/employee relations issues and provide guidance to supervisors for contract compliance.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to promote proactive and constructive labor relations with unions.
  • Stay updated on national labor trends, laws, and regulations.
  • Offer consistent interpretation of policies, collective bargaining agreements, and laws.
  • Work closely with the enterprise legal team and employment attorneys.
  • Build and maintain relationships with labor leaders to resolve labor issues and facilitate information exchange.
  • Lead contract negotiations with labor unions and serve as a consultant to the management team.
  • Strategize bargaining positions with leaders using data analysis.
  • Lead the company in collective bargaining, grievance activities, and arbitration.
  • Collaborate with HR and legal teams to develop and update labor policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Proactively research and stay informed about industry trends and best practices in labor relations, and incorporate into labor strategy, when appropriate.
  • Foster open and transparent dialogue on laborrelated matters among stakeholders.
  • Build a positive employee relations experience.
  • Assist other areas of the Human Resources Division with special projects.

Job Requirements:

  • List of general education, background and experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities typically required to effectively perform the responsibilities of the job. Also include any required licenses and/or designations._
  • Education: A bachelor's degree in human resources, labor relations, business administration, or a related field or equivalent experience. A master's degree or certification in labor relations may be preferred.
  • Experience: 10+ years of experience in labor relations, including 5+ years in a leadership or managerial role. Experience negotiating labor contracts, handling grievance procedures, and conducting arbitration cases is often necessary. Experience in nonmanufacturing sector and professional settings preferred (health care, university, service, airline). Work experiences in operations in addition to HR and a supervisory role responsible for employees represented by a labor contract highly preferred.
  • Knowledge: Indepth understanding of labor laws, regulations, and best practices. Familiarity with collective bargaining processes, union dynamics, and arbitration procedures is essential.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills are crucial for effectively negotiating with union representatives, employees, presenting proposals, and providing guidance to management and supervisors.
