As part of the Advanced Brain & Spine Unit at Hoag Memorial Hospital, Newport Beach, you'll deliver direct inpatient nursing care as per the California Nurse Practice Act, and in support of the mission of the Patient Care Services Division.

Being a Hoag Clinical Nurse I means serving our community by using research and evidence-based outcomes, and collaborating with members of your team to offer an extraordinary level of patient care.

Inside Hoag's Stroke Unit

Our Advanced Brain & Spine Unit features 33 beds and a nurse to patient ratio of 1:4.

Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the delivery of safe, timely, and appropriate, quality care to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients suffering from acute non-complex ischemic stroke and/or neurological deficits, and those recovering from spinal, other orthopedic, and various neurosurgical procedures.

You may also be assigned to care for general cardiac medical patients.


Other duties may include:

  • Caring for stroke, transient ischemic attack, and spinal surgical patients
  • Providing continuity of care through implementation/utilization of the Plan of Care (POC) for the patients.
  • Administering medications and intravenous therapy with the ability to assess the appropriate indication dosing and effects of the medication administered.
  • Communicating changes in the patient's condition to the Charge Nurse/Supervisor and the physician directing care, as well as pertinent information at shift report using the patient POC.
  • Appropriately assessing and implementing prescribed interventions to ensure pain management.
  • Providing ongoing assessment of the nutritional status for each patient, implementing dietary consultation when indicated to provide/maintain adequate nutritional intake, and communicating nutritional needs/problems to the physician.

Required

  • Active California RN License.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification within 30 days of hire.
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Successful completion of an EKG course or equivalent.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). If you haven't obtained a BSN upon hire, you will be asked to begin a BSN program within one year of the hire date and obtain your BSN within two years of starting the program.
Preferred

  • BSN.
  • A minimum of one (1) year recent Neurovascular Telemetry/Stroke care experience in an acute care facility within the past three years.
