Director at Springs Learning Center, New Haven, Connecticut


Become part of a mission-driven organization Springs Learning Center, a ministry of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, is seeking a visionary Director to lead its efforts to break the cycle of poverty, empower adult learners, and enhance their quality of life.

The center's staff and volunteers are devoted to uplifting the underserved through personalized tutoring in basic literacy, job preparedness, and citizenship.


Role:

As the Director, you will lead the center, engage in strategic planning, manage educational programs, coordinate volunteers, and foster relationships in the community.

This full-time role is crucial to grow and sustain the work of the center.


Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in education or a related discipline, master's degree preferred;
  • Proven experience in adult education or ESL instruction;
  • Previous administrative experience in a nonprofit setting is preferred;
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish and knowledge of the Catholic faith will be considered assets.

The Center's staff and volunteers serve the marginalized by providing individual tutoring in basic literacy skills, job readiness, and citizenship. The Director is responsible for the overall management and growth of Springs Learning Center, including its educational programming, volunteer management, development, and community outreach.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


(1) _
Major Activity_
: Manage Learning Center Operations:

  • Supervise SLC staff and volunteers.
  • Provide staff required training, coaching, and development, and conduct performance appraisals.
  • Develop and operate within an annual budget.
  • Provide an annual report to the Dominican Sisters of Peace Leadership Team.
  • Communicate with the Office of Founded Ministries as the first and primary contact within the Congregational structure.
  • Coordinate and implement a Strategic Plan.

(2) _
Major Activity_
: Manage Adult Learner Programs:

  • Direct all programs provided by the SLC.
  • Determine learner programs to be offered, provide required resources, and evaluate effectiveness.
  • Develop annual calendar for tutors and learners.
  • Develop and implement learner recruitment programs as needed.
  • Oversee _Filemaker_ Computer Database Program with statistical information of learners and tutors.

(3) _
Major Activity_
: Manage Tutor Recruitment, Training, and Support:

  • Oversee tutor recruitment, including addressing issues/questions from prospective and current tutors.
  • With staff, provide monthly tutor training workshops for new tutors, and training when tutors are matched with a student.
  • Develop programs/communications to assist in improving tutor teaching skills.
  • Plan and coordinate the tutor appreciation events.

Major Activity_
: Manage Advisory Council:

  • Schedule a minimum of four advisory council meetings per year.
  • Serve as an exofficio member.
  • Work with the Advisory Council Chair to set agenda for meetings, including training on the Dominican Charism and the mission of the Dominican Sisters of Peace.
  • Prepare a report for Advisory Council meetings outlining significant topics/issues occurring at the SLC.
  • Assist in recruiting, onboarding, and orientation of new council members.

(5) _
Major Activity_
: Manage Development and Outreach:

  • With support from the Advisory Council, directs all fundraising activities for the SLC, including seeking donations, etc.
  • Oversee learner fee programs.
  • Work with Office of Mission Advancement and Communication on fundraising and grant writing/implementation and on ensuring that social media accounts, the SLC website, and printed materials are up to date.
  • Promote public awareness of SLC programs by communicating with local parishes, libraries, and community organizations and representing the Center at local events.

(6) _
Major Activity_
: Manage Facilities:


  • Manage physical conditions of the space rented by the Center.
  • Oversee and suggest enhancements regarding internet, telephone, Wi-Fi, and security networks, etc., as required.
  • Work within the DSOP information technology structure to purchase and install new computers/equipment, as required.

Major Activity_
: Miscellaneous

  • Attend and participate in professional conventions, workshops, and meetings to stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of Adult Literacy.
  • Take online courses to learn the latest methods of teaching adults.
  • Participate in monthly Outreach & Learning Center Meetings hosted by the Office of Founded Ministries and seek opportunities for mutual support and collaboration with similar ministries and t
