8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday
SALARY:
$3,267.93 to $3,629.25 bi-weekly
JOB OBJECTIVES:
As an integral part of the City Attorney's team, the primary goal is to provide comprehensive legal support and
guidance to the City of Lafayette, its elected officials, departments, boards, and commissions across various
legal domains.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Legal Counseling and Advice: Offer general legal counsel and guidance to City departments, boards,
and commissions, exploring alternative legal and administrative avenues to resolve issues affecting the
City. Organize information, interpret laws, court decisions, ordinances, and other legal sources to provide
informed counsel to City officials on legal matters. Provides legal advice related to Code Enforcement,
Animal Control, Utility Billing, Risk Management, and Purchasing.
- Contract Review and Drafting: Thoroughly review and draft contracts and professional service
- Discovery and
Records Response:
Handle various discovery requests and public records inquiries
promptly and accurately.
- Legal Research and Documentation: Conduct indepth legal research, prepare memoranda supporting
- Litigation and Compliance: Advocate for the City by litigating ordinance violations and filing small claims
- Public Engagement and Education: Attend meetings and public events to address inquiries from the
- Interdepartmental Collaboration: Collaborate with other departments to ensure the City's adherence to
- Continuous Learning and
Legislative Updates:
Stay abreast of municipal law developments through
regular training seminars and continuing legal education, providing updates on pertinent legislation to
City stakeholders.
- Initiative and Judgment: Demonstrate initiative and exercise independent judgment in addressing legal
**SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: - Possession of a law degree from an accredited institution and active membership in good standing with
the Indiana Bar.
- Preferred three (3) years of experience as a practicing attorney.
- Demonstrated ability to assess and judge the observable characteristics of data, individuals, or situations,
- Proficiency in comprehending a variety of materials relevant to government, legal, and city administrative
principles and conceptual thinking.
- Skill in effectively navigating interactions with diverse departments, both in giving and receiving
- Proficiency in delivering public presentations and effective oral communication with colleagues, other city
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office products, including Teams, SharePoint, Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Possession of a valid Indiana Driver's license and a demonstrated safe driving record.
