The Course Instructor serves as the lead classroom coordinator for a Summer Discovery Academy enrichment course at University of California, Berkeley.

Academies are interactive career exploration experiences for academically advanced high school students.

Class is in session from 9-5 for two-week sessions centered around experiential learning relevant to the course content such as hands-on activities like organ dissection, suturing practice, emergency medicine simulations, and visits to local professional institutions.

Several advanced-career professionals will also deliver guest lecturers to supplement student learning.

Students are exposed to the profession to see what a "day in the life" is like while also developing durable leadership skills that will set them up for success in any future academic or professional pursuit.


A fully developed course curriculum will be provided by Summer Discovery Academics and the Course Instructor will receive training to ensure quality delivery of an experiential and engaging project-based course.

Some medical skills are required including:stitches instruction, dissection experience, and medical setting experience.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Implement experiential course curriculum for 8 hours per day for 7 days of total instruction per session.
  • Manage coursespecific materials and activities through Canvas learning management system, including timely provision of course content, activities, and assignments.
  • Attend up to three virtual trainings with the Summer Discovery Academics team before program implementation to review curriculum and course delivery expectations.
  • By June 10, conduct a thorough review of the provided curriculum in Canvas and prepare any desired supplemental learning activities or material. A standardized curriculum will be provided, and the Course Instructor may develop additional instructional resources according to individual preference.
  • Work with Summer Discovery oncampus staff to coordinate handson learning experiences, offcampus field trips, and guest lectures.
  • Oversee Course Assistants to communicate support needs in the classroom
  • As needed, identify any curriculum quality issues during instruction and communicate clear and timely program updates to the oncampus Academic Dean.
  • Communicate classroom support and resource needs to the Academic Dean in a timely fashion.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • MA, PhD, or terminal degree (or current students thereof) at an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • 3+ years of experience as an undergraduate instructor or teaching assistant and/or high school teaching experience preferred.
  • Appropriate combination of relevant education, industry experience, and certifications may be considered.
  • Experience with projectbased learning and instruction.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and be eligible to work in the US.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Google Suite, and Canvas LMS.
  • Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience.
  • This is a seasonal summer position and requires ability to commute daily to UC Berkeley campus on designated class days. _
