As a Teacher, you will be responsible for creating an engaging and age-appropriate early childhood classroom environment while ensuring compliance with program guidelines, state regulations, and organizational policies.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Plan and supervise daily activities in the classroom, catering to each child's developmental abilities.
  • Assign and monitor activities for teacher assistants and volunteers.
  • Build positive rapport with families, acquainting them with the educational content of the program and encouraging their active participation in their child's development.
  • Maintain a basic inventory of classroom supplies and equipment as instructed by the Supervisor.
  • Integrate related services areas, such as health, safety, and nutrition, into lesson plans.
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans that meet the needs and developmental goals of the children, incorporating input from teacher assistants and parents.
  • Conduct home visits and parent/teacher conferences annually to discuss child's progress, educational goals, and ongoing assessments.
  • Prepare required reports and program paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure classrooms operate in compliance with Wilmington Head Start, Inc. program policies, Head Start Performance Standards, and Delacare regulations.
  • Maintain confidentiality and proper maintenance of children's files.
  • Create a nurturing atmosphere conducive to learning through effective room arrangement, cleanliness, and appearance.
  • Observe and record anecdotal notes of children's behavior daily using the ongoing assessment system.
  • Greet children, parents, and visitors warmly upon arrival.
  • Assist with the Parent Committee.
  • Plan, request, and organize field trips in collaboration with the Center Manager and parents.
  • Supervise and participate in familystyle dining and record meal counts accurately.
  • Maintain daily attendance records, ensuring proper signin and signout procedures are followed.
  • Enforce positive guidance policies for children and handle crisis situations with good judgment.
  • Provide individualized activities for each child within the weekly lesson plan.
  • Facilitate smooth transitions for children throughout the day.
  • Communicate with daycare providers regarding specific children as necessary.
  • Establish and maintain a daily classroom schedule and routines.
  • Implement endorsed curriculum as required by Wilmington Head Start, Inc.
  • Interact with children at their developmental level in the classroom, on the playground, and during field trips.
  • Attend Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings whenever possible and incorporate children's IEP goals into individualized lesson plans.
  • Attend to children's personal hygiene needs as necessary (e.g., wiping noses, changing garments, cleaning faces and hands).
  • Adhere to physical demands, including passing a physical examination and TB test.
  • Work in an environment occasionally near moving mechanical parts.

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field, including 18 credit hours in Early Childhood Education from an accredited college or university. DOE/Delaware 1st Teacher Certificate.
  • One to two years of related teaching experience and training.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check as required by Delaware law and organizational policies.
  • No citations for abuse or neglect.
  • Administration of Medication certification.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Bilingual abilities desired.

Physical Demands:


  • Ability to pass a physical examination and TB test.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
