This is a seasonal position performing work in the construction, remodel, and maintenance of Miller Park Zoo (MPZ) facilities, grounds, structures and equipment on a varying assignment basis.

Work involves responsibility for performing skilled maintenance work independently or with assigned crew.


Examples of Duties

Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs carpentry, plumbing, minor electrical, painting, HVAC, mechanical, and welding repairs on City facilities, parks, structures and equipment.
  • Supervises one or more persons on the job.
  • Drives a truck for the purpose of transporting workers, materials, and machines.
  • Analyzes assignments or problems; plans for methods, materials and tools needed for construction; repairs, maintains, or provides resolution of the assignment or problem.
  • Maintains maintenance schedule for facilities, structures and machinery and monitor performance on an established schedule. Performs corrective action as needed.
  • Performs snow plowing and ice removal for City buildings and facilities in a safe and efficient manner.

General Skill Levels:


Knowledge of:


  • Carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, building system controls and general maintenance materials, methods, tools, equipment, and procedures.
  • Occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary when performing assigned work.
  • Specialized tools and equipment used in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, general construction and HVAC maintenance and repairs.

Ability to:


  • Perform work independently or in a group under limited supervision.
  • Ensure that proper onthejob safety procedures are followed and safety equipment and are procedures are properly and consistently used.
  • Communicate clearly, courteously, and professionally with the public and all City employees sometimes in difficult or stressful situations.
  • Understand and follow general oral and written instructions.
  • Receive work assignments through verbal, written, text or electronic means.
  • Safely operate tools and equipment used in carpentry, plumbing, minor electrical repair, general construction, HVAC and general maintenance with mínimal supervision.
  • Maintain work records and logs.

Required Education/Experience:


  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Training and/or experience in carpentry, minor electrical repairs, HVAC, plumbing, and masonry construction preferred.

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather, temperature, and humidity conditions.


Work requires the ability to:


  • Work evenings, nights and weekends as required for emergency situations.
  • Walk/work in variety of natural and altered ground surfaces which may be uneven, wet or slippery or sloped.
  • Sit/drive vehicles or equipment.
  • Climb stairs.
  • Stand or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Enter, exit and safely operate motorized equipment.
  • Attend occasional training, as required.
  • Physical strength and endurance sufficient to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
