Final Inspector Job Description

  • Collaborate with QA Manager, Plant Manager, or Production Manager
  • Knowledge of basic NDT processes with personal vision correctable to 20/20
  • Committed to personal excellence, integrity, and perhaps being unpopular
  • Use Microsoft Office software packages, reading and comprehension skills, general mechanical aptitude, familiarity with rail repair techniques and test equipment.
  • Knowledge of the railcar inspection and assembly process, work order, traveler and basic mathematical skills. Basic understanding of how metal is formed and manipulated.
  • Verify final tank and hopper car repair work for completeness and accuracy to associated documentation, audit and correct car file inaccuracies, confirm completeness of NDT and mechanical repair or registration reports. Take, compare, and review final car photos for completeness. Commitment to uphold and demonstrate safety. Ability to meet deadlines and remain on task in a busy, loud, environment.
  • Document control, proof reading, records reconciliation, orientation and matching of components on cars to blueprint. Commitment to professionalism in fast paced environment. Be a selfstarter but as questions as necessary.
  • Identify defective or incorrect material and poor workmanship with general knowledge, drawings, engineering standards, and codes. Perform joint customer inspections.

Basic Requirements

  • This position requires a high school diploma/GED and preferably Technical Training or equivalent experience. Ready to hit the ground running mínimal training available.
  • Three (3) years of railroad repair experience preferred.
  • QAM, AAR, M1003, M1002, Field Manual familiarity is a bonus
  • Detailed knowledge of inspection procedures, tank car construction and FRA and AAR rules and regulations. Additional training in inspection processes will be required.
  • Familiarity with AS400, Outlook, customer data systems and Microsoft Office
  • Possess reading and comprehension skills associated with Fleet Repair Standards
  • General mechanical aptitude and ability to use railroad gauges, testing techniques, & test equipment necessary for rail car inspections.
  • Have vision correctable to 20/20 for inspection activities.

Working Environment

  • Average care required avoiding injury while handling or positioning material.
  • Climb ladders to heights of approximately 14 feet, bend, crawl, stoop, squat, kneel, lie on back, and stretch to perform tank or hopper car inspections.
  • Tolerate heights, confined spaces, & working through periods of inclement weather.
  • Willingness to wear safety equipment such as safety shoes, hard hats, air fed respirators, body harnesses, and safety glasses. Attend structured additional training.
