Reporting to the Director of Spiritual Care and Education, the Per-Diem Chaplain is responsible for addressing the spiritual, religious, and emotional needs of patients, families, and staff at Mount Sinai Hospital.

The Per-Diem Chaplain joins a dynamic team within the Department of Spiritual Care and Education, fostering collaborative relationships with interdisciplinary care teams and contributing to the well-being of the Mount Sinai community.

The Per-Diem Chaplain position may be temporary or part-time.

In this position, the Per Diem Chaplain is responsible for on-call coverage from 8:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. on weeknights, weekends, and holidays, serving the Manhattan hospitals within the Mount Sinai Health System.

The Per Diem Chaplain will primarily work remotely, initially responding to requests by phone and then, as needed, in person according to department policies and procedures.

Compensation will include a standard rate with additional pay based on incoming requests.

Responsibilities

Demonstrate mastery in chaplaincy knowledge and skills.
Foster effective communication with diverse patients, family members, and staff.
Build and maintain relationships with clinical and support staff.
Liaise with hospital and community clergy.
Conduct visits across designated hospital floors and ambulatory settings.
Assess and address spiritual and religious needs, ensuring tailored interventions.
Provide care and support to hospital staff.
Mentor Clinical Pastoral Education interns and residents.
Actively participate in interdisciplinary meetings and initiatives.
Facilitate holiday services, memorials, and special events.
Participate in a daily oncall rotation.
Fulfill documentation requirements, including electronic health record charting.
Present on spiritual care topics to external departments/units.
Participate in department quality improvement initiatives.
Uphold the code of ethics of the Association of Professional Chaplains.
Adhere to all Mount Sinai Health System standards, policies, and procedures.
Achieve and maintain board certification.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Master's degree preferred.
Successful completion of at least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education in an accredited program.
Ability to provide compassionate and nonjudgmental spiritual care to individuals or groups in times of crisis, grief, or spiritual distress.
Possess knowledge of and respect for spiritual orienting systems to effectively interact with people from diverse backgrounds.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of ethical principles and maintain a high level of integrity in all interactions and interventions.
Excellent verbal and written communication abilities to convey empathy, understanding, and comfort while actively listening and responding to the spiritual and emotional needs of individuals.
Proficiency in providing spiritual care and support during emergencies and critical incidents, while working collaboratively with other clinical or support professionals.
Sensitivity and awareness of cultural differences, norms, and practices, ensuring the ability to provide inclusive spiritual care to individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Capacity to empathize, understand, and respond to the emotional needs of others, while maintaining personal resilience and managing emotional boundaries effectively.
Ability to collaborate with colleagues within the interdisciplinary team.
Flexibility to work in diverse environments and adjust spiritual care interventions to meet the needs of different populations and situations.
Ability to lead and facilitate groups.

Compensation Statement

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements.

The salary range for this role is $ $38.36 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need.

The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
