Medical Director of Laboratory Medicine

Alameda Health System is located in Alameda County, California.

The three AHS Clinical Laboratories are located in Highland Hospital (Oakland, CA), Alameda Hospital (Alameda, CA) and San Leandro Hospital (San Leandro, CA).

These clinical laboratories provide testing and point of care testing oversight for these three acute care hospitals and associated outpatient clinics, an Acute Care Psychiatric Hospital, three skilled nursing facilities, three free-standing ambulatory clinics and a specialty wound care clinic spread across 20 miles.

Total annual laboratory test volume is ~1.5-2 million and anatomic pathology specimens ~10,000.

Alameda Health Medical Group (AHMG) is a multispecialty entity that supports the majority of physicians who staff Alameda Health System.

We recently formed in July 2020 from two prior medical groups, producing a practitioner base that spans from new residency graduates to tenured master clinicians who have been at AHS for more than 30 years.

Our group is defined by values including inclusivity, engagement, patient advocacy, leadership development and physician wellness. We take an active anti-racism stance to our work.

The current Department of Pathology has 2 divisions including Laboratory Medicine and Anatomic Pathology. The service spans all AHS campuses and activities.


Essential Responsibilities:


  • Serves as an internal and external champion and role model for AHS. Promotes an unwavering commitment to high quality care, excellent patient experience, and support of all staff across the department.
  • Maintains an awareness of daily operations of relevant clinical areas through regular in-person leadership rounding.
  • Supports members of the Department in professional and faculty development, including teaching skills and research efforts.
  • Ensures quality patient care services by maintaining and developing programs that are compliant with established county, state, and federally mandated policies and procedures, including licensing and accreditation programs and graduate medical education.
  • Supports and training programs for medical students, residents and fellows.
  • Exercises responsibility for departmental medical staff duties including, but not limited to, making recommendations for the granting of Medical Staff privileges, and the appointment and reappointment of Medical Staff, as set forth in the regulations including, but not limited to, Joint Commission standards; e.g. OPPE, FPPE, and yearly staff evaluations.
  • Provides or designates daily oversight of clinical initiatives, including those related to equity, patient throughput, patient safety and patient experience in ambulatory and inpatient environments.
  • Participates in health-system initiatives related to development and implementation of appropriate utilization of medical services and clinical documentation standards.
  • Collaborates with AHS leadership in the development and strategic planning of clinical service lines within the Department.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the CMO or their designee.

  • Provides clear communication and transparency in collaborating with colleagues within and outside the Department and with members of the executive team.
  • Provides leadership skills that focus on listening, supporting, and mentoring members of the Department, while fostering accountability and productivity.
  • Demonstrates commitment and skills necessary to advocate for marginalized communities.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • A current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in accordance with the laws of the State of California.
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience, such as a Division Chief, Chair of a department or Program Director and a proven commitment to caring for an underserved community.
