    About Us:

    The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is the oldest continuously operating public art museum in the United States, greeting guests since 1842. In the heart of Hartford, and home to a collection of nearly 50,000 works of art, the Wadsworth is a cultural pillar of the art community.

    Position Overview:

    Reporting to the Associate Curator of Costume and Textiles, the Costumes and Textiles Technical Assistant assists with and provides curatorial care, cataloguing, and management of a collection of about 2,500 textile objects and 5,000 costumes and accessories, ranging in time from Coptic to Contemporary, in size from thimbles to tapestries, and representing every continent. The primary focus of the position will be to assist the Associate Curator of Costumes and Textiles in a project to inventory, catalogue, assess, and when possible, re-house the collection.

    Target Salary: $42,000 annually – Position term is one year from appointment with potential renewal for a second year.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Working with the Associate Curator of Costumes and Textiles, Conservation, and the Registrar's department, the primary responsibilities of the position will be to inventory, catalogue, assess, photograph, and rehouse the collection.
    • In tandem with the Associate Curator, systematically examine, inventory, and catalogue all works in the collection (identify, date, photograph, measure, note materials and physical condition).
    • Supervise volunteers to assist in the above tasks.
    • Assist Curator with updating the collection database under the oversight of the Registrar.
    • Assess each work for condition.
    • Identify at-risk works of art and develop programs for mitigation.
    • Assist with minor preventative conservation treatments addressing common issues such as creases& folds, staining, separation, tears and weak/brittle/frayed fabric.
    • Re-house works as resources permit according to accepted professional standards.
    • Assist Curator to mount costumes and textiles for photography and exhibitions.
    • Assist as works are professionally photographed.
    • Provide support for a series of modest installations and exhibitions as works are catalogued and assessed that enliven the galleries and exhibition program, and engender increased support for the collection.
    • Provide content for the museum's website and social media when possible.
    • Present public programs at the museum (informal talks, public lectures).
    • Aid in program support for the Costume and Textile Society, one of the museum's special interest support groups.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Familiarity with conservation documentation methods preferred.
    • Familiarity with condition reporting.
    • Experience with standard registration methods.
    • Experience with data entry (ARGUS preferred).
    • Manual dexterity and superior hand skills; attention to detail a must.
    • Ability to create specialized displays with guidance: hanging, box & mount construction.
    • Experience with mannequin dressing and/or textile mounting in a museum or gallery setting.
    • Advanced sewing skills(including pattern making) preferred.
    • Experience with textile weave and fabric identification.
    • Independent and self-directed, with the ability to take initiative, anticipate actions needed, and to exercise discretion and independent judgment.
    • In possession of excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
    • Effective collaboration skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines among conflicting priorities.
    • Dedicated to original thinking, problem solving, to accuracy, and to completeness, with a willingness to learn from direct personal involvement and hands-on experience.

    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a Costume and Textile Technical Assistant encounters while performing the essential functions of the role:

    This job primarily operates in Costume and Textile storage but will maintain a presence in administrative offices and conservation studio within a museum of both modern and historic architectural elements. This role routinely uses standard tools such as steamers, irons, sewing machines & notions, magnification devices, microscopes & analytic equipment but also traditional office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. Compliance with Museum health and safety-related protocols is required.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to receive oral and written instructions and to clearly communicate in person, over the telephone, through email and through other electronic means. Employee is required to move about the work area, ascend and descend stairs; and stand and/or sit for extended periods of time. The employee is occasionally required to lift, drag and/or move up to 30 pounds unassisted. The employee is required to visually or otherwise identify, observe, assess and differentiate dimension and color.
