Position Description


OBJECTIVE

A High Tech & Alternate Media Technician apprenticeship is a program for qualified individuals to develop marketable job skills in a structured, coordinated work and school training environment.

Individuals that finish the program will be able to:

perform high level tasks in six core assistive technology programs (Kurzweil, Read & Write, Jaws, ZoomText, Dragon Naturally Speaking, and Otter Ai); perform intermediate level tasks in a variety of other assistive technology software; train students and staff in the use of assistive technology software; create multiple forms of alternate media; manage a high tech computer lab; and communicate with students, staff, and faculty in both industry terms and layman's terms.

Other duties as assigned by area manager.


DURATION

The apprentice may be employed for a maximum of (9) semesters, consecutive or cumulative, including summer sessions, and may not work for more than 170 days or more than 980 hours during the academic year.


Responsibilities:

TRAINING GOALS &
OBJECTIVES
Individuals participating in the program will be required to complete six levels of training.

Each level of training, a semester in length, will target a more advanced level of the use of assistive or alternate media technology.

The training will incorporate written, oral, and hands-on components.

Level One:

An Introduction to Assistive and Alternate Media Technologies

Level Two:

Mastering the five core assistive technology programs for the DPS lab

Level Three:

Learning the remaining assistive technology programs

Level Four:

Training Others in the use of Assistive Technology

Level Five:

Producing Alternate Media

Level Six:

Managing a High Tech Computer Laboratory


ASSESSMENT

Each participant in the program will be assessed at each level of training based on their ability to complete four increasingly difficult assignments.


Each assignment will contain four key components:
a research component, a writing component, an oral component, and a hands-on component. Failure to complete assignments will result in dismissal from the program.


Qualifications:


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Good oral and writing skills
Intermediate computer skills (strong familiarity with Microsoft operating systems, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, and Internet Explorer)
Ability and willingness to establish and maintain good working relationships with students, faculty and staff
Sensitivity to students of various academic, socioeconomic, cultural, religious, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
Current California driver's license MEETING

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a part-time, pre-professional apprentice position. An apprentice may not work more than 170 working days or more than 980 hours during the fiscal year. Apprentices may be employed for a maximum of nine semesters, consecutive or cumulative, including summer sessions.
