Standard Steel is a leading manufacturer of forged steel wheels and axles for freight railcars, locomotives and passenger railcars. It is the only producer of forged steel wheels for railcars and locomotives in North America.

Customers include major Class I railroads in North America, freight railcar builders, railcar and locomotive maintenance shops, the Amtrak national railroad, locomotive builders and regional transit authorities.

Standard Steel, LLC, and its affiliated companies were purchased by Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. and Sumitomo Corporation in 2011, but the existing facility has been producing forgings since 1795. In 2012, Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. merged with Nippon Steel Corporation to become Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, the majority owner of Standard Steel.

Standard Steel's manufacturing plant is located at 500 North Walnut Street in Burnham, Pennsylvania.


Responsibilities include:


  • Rolls by hand, checks, marks, and segregates wheels, tires, rings, blanks, etc., in Machine Shop #1 for expediting, inspecting and/or shipping.
  • Checks and marks wheels on Wheel Inspection Line. (Railroad wheels).
  • From lists furnished by Machine Shop #1 Office, checks the order, item, heat, and serial numbers of material; segregates, stamps, and/or marks material according to requirements specified by the Foreman, Metallurgical Department, or Customer.
  • Marks and segregates record cards for material in proper multiples, in accordance with dimensions and tolerances indicated by Inspectors.
  • Greases finished hubs and installs protective pads on finished counter turn wheels.
  • Uses open end wrench as necessary to change Inspection Line for different size wheels.
  • Weighs product for shipment.
  • Hooks up and unhooks cranes and directs cranes and/or lift trucks in moving material throughout the Department.
  • Operates powered hand grinder to perform any miscellaneous grinding and/or buffing product as necessary to prepare product for shipment.
  • Replaces worn abrasive wheels on grinder as necessary, obtaining replacements at Shop Tool Crib, and returning worn or defective abrasive wheels to the Tool Crib.
  • Keeps grinder properly lubricated and reports to Foreman any need for repairs or adjustments.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports of material handled as requested.
  • Keeps work area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications required:


  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Manufacturing experience preferred.
  • General computer skills required.
  • Must be available to work all three shifts including overtime and weekends.
