SUPERVISES:

Lifeguards, depending upon Tower Assignment

JOB TYPE:

Seasonal - May 24, 2024, to September 2, 2024

WORK WEEK:

As assigned, based on department needs. Weekends/Evenings required.

The lifeguard captain is a seasonal position with the Town of Middletown responsible for supervising working lifeguards, leading and maintaining surveillance over a section of beach from an assigned station in the protection of life, and prevention of accidents; orders and performs aquatic and medical rescues; and performs other related work as required.


I ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for ensuring assigned team of lifeguards maintain vigilance in ocean surveillance over assigned section of the beach to protect life, prevent accidents, including those related to animals, and alcohol, among others.
  • Adjust tower assignments based on ocean conditions to ensure patron safety.
  • Train lifeguards to utilize swimming, padding and water lifesaving skills to perform water rescues, such as torpedo, surfboard, rescue boat.
  • Plan lifeguard daily physical fitness activities and emergency response drills. Spotcheck lifeguard professional knowledge.
  • To proactively seek and maintain the safety of beach patrons, staff, and the public, setting an example for assigned lifeguards.
  • Provides general assistance, information, and instruction to the public regarding beaches, surf conditions, and other related public safety issues.
  • To receive, respond to and/or resolve questions, inquiries and complaints from the beach patrons and bring problems to the attention of or direct the public to appropriate supervisor or manager.
  • To administer basic first aid for minor injuries.
  • Assist with beach cleanliness and trash pickup as needed. All beach employees are required to help keep the beach facilities, parking lots, and beach area clean and litter free.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Assist with preseason beach operations and preparation as needed.
II NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES _The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the position and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties:

  • Requires knowledge of Ocean, weather, surf, beach, and environmental conditions; first aid practices, terminology, and techniques; cardiopulmonary resuscitation practices, terminology, and techniques; practices, terminology and techniques to operate general lifeguard and rescue equipment, such as radio equipment and paddleboards; municipal codes and ordinances regarding use of beaches and parks; applicable federal and state laws, including state boating laws.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Familiarity with Town ordinances

III MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


  • Previous and relevant leadership experience with References. Examples include Lifeguard Captain or Co-Captain; Military, Police, Fire or Emergency Medical leadership positions; School Teacher, Athletic Team Captain; Fitness Instructor; Eagle Scout, or similar leadership roles.
  • Graduation from High School or a GED equivalent, or College experience preferred.
  • Must possess proper State SURF certification and maintain it as a condition of employment.
  • Must possess current American Red Cross (or accredited institution) Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR/AED certification and maintain it as a condition of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Must possess problemsolving skills.
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to the highest quality of customer service.
  • Must be available to work on evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation.
