_**Under the direction of the Grounds Foreman II, the Cement Finisher I constructs forms, lays, and finishes cement. An employee in this class performs assignments requiring the use of skilled concrete finishing techniques primarily on flat surfaces. Concrete projects include sidewalks, curbs and gutters, pads, footings, concrete steps and retaining walls.

Responsibilities extend to participation in all operations preliminary to finishing, and having the knowledge and ability to measure and layout all concrete work and construct all forms necessary for the pouring and finishing of cement.

During the winter or when the work of the incumbent is not required he is expected to work as an equipment operator, or a laborer on a maintenance crew.

A Grounds Foreman II, principally through appraisal of the effectiveness with which work is accomplished and schedules are maintained, supervises work.

_ DUTIES &


RESPONSIBILITIES:
_

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Sets all forms, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, steps, retaining walls, etc.;
  • Pours and finishes cement for sidewalks, curbs, gutters, pad, steps, retaining walls, etc.;
  • Spades freshly poured cement and screens surface level with forms;
  • Floats surface of fresh cement and dusts, trowels, grooves and edges surfaces as required;
  • Wets down 'green' cement during curing period;
  • Points up and bags concrete finishes;
  • Installs water seals and expansion joints;
  • Grinds and chips concrete;
  • Patches new and old cement work where holes have developed;
  • Operates a crew vantype or pickup truck as needed in the maintenance operation;
  • Performs a variety of other manual work in assisting tradesmen, motor equipment operators and others in connection with the maintenance of school buildings and grounds; and
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
_**The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Thorough knowledge of the common practices, codes, standards, tools, terminology and safety precautions of the trade;
  • Ability to work for plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships;
  • Ability to complete asbestos related training; and
  • Deemed as essential personnel; may be required to work day, night or weekend hours to meet the operational needs of the department.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
_

Completion of a high school diploma or GED; considerable experience as a cement finisher and apprentice program; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
_

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License (Class A Commercial Driver's License), at time of appointment, and a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to climb a 40' vertical ladder, work from scaffolding and a bucket truck, the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 80 lbs., work in cramped interior spaces, and the ability to do extensive walking, bending, stooping, crawling and kneeling in the course of completing daily work assignments.

The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
