Department/Organization: 212701 – Special Ed and Multiple Abilities
Normal Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm; August – May (10 months)
Job Summary: The Research Assistant performs research work in support of a major research project. May order equipment and supplies, set up equipment, perform experiments, monitor results, collect data and/or prepare support material. May supervise students or other support workers assigned to the research project.
Additional Department Summary: Implements early literacy intervention to students with Intellectual and Developmental Delays, supports families of students directly, and collects data. Works closely with the project team. Provides the FOTB intervention daily to individual or small groups of children. Aids in administering assessments of literacy growth to participating students.
Project Intensity evaluates the effectiveness of a literacy intervention, Friends on the Block (FOTB), with students with Intellectual and Developmental Delays (IDD). The purpose of Project Intensity is to conduct a randomized control trial to evaluate the efficacy of a literacy intervention designed to enhance reading and language outcomes for elementary students with IDD. The University of Alabama will assess students with IDD and provide the FOTB intervention to 60 children while observing the business-as-usual reading instruction to another group of 60 children. Children receiving the FOTB intervention will participate in the intervention every school day for about 20-30 minutes per day for about 50 weeks.
The Reading Intervention Assistant works 10 months out of the year. Continuation of this assignment is contingent on annual funding.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field based on the area of research and some experience. Graduate Assistant, Intern, or student oriented research experience will be considered. To be considered student experience, it must be detailed in the employment section on the application.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and some experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with young elementary students with IDD. Experience providing literacy instruction to elementary students.
