What does a Lifeguard do?


The Lifeguard at the Channel Islands YMCA creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.


  • Maintain constant surveillance of water and pool deck areas by 1010 scanning
  • Assist swimmers in distress
  • Provide emergency medical assistance as trained to any person on the YMCA premise as
  • Necessary
  • Provide support to swim lessons and aquatic programs instructors
  • Take and record chemical readings set forth by branch
  • Know and operate pool equipment as required (i.e. lane lines, chair lift)
  • Enforce and educate members about aquatic rules and procedures set forth by branch
  • Provides exceptional customer service and fosters connections with members
  • Participating and satisfactory completion of inservice trainings
  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; valid work permit required if a minor
  • Ability to obtain a criminal record clearance, if over 18 years of age
  • Previous work experience preferred
  • Must be able to complete YMCA swim test and pass entry written test
  • Must possess valid lifeguard certification from the Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, UnitedStates Lifesaving Association, Starfish Aquatics, or the YMCA. Ability to transition to Red Cross certification within 90 days
  • Complete required certifications within 30 days of hire
  • Complete all required Branch and Position specific trainings as required within two weeks of hire
