Powerhouse Arts is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression.

Housed in a purpose-built-facility in Brooklyn, the organization hosts an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who work together to co-create and share artistic practices vital to the well-being of artists and the communities to which they serve.

Our new facilities house fabrication services, production services, production spaces, and member workshops for artisans.


Powerhouse is seeking a full-time Ceramics Studio Manager who will report to the Ceramics Studio Director and will participate in all aspects of community studio management and fabrication.

The ceramics studio manager plays a crucial role in maintaining the studio's daily operations, program development, and culture.


Responsibilities:


  • Hold recurring 1:1 meetings with technicians
  • Train existing and new staff in new processes, administrative work, member services, and fabrication techniques as needed
  • Scheduling organize coverage for time off requests
  • Update colleagues with goals and tasks
  • Assist in collaborating with the technology department as it relates to membership and fabrication
  • Assist in planning AIR and Fellowship Program
  • Maintain and improve studio maintenance schedule to keep up with changes
  • Work with the Ceramic Studio Director to develop and implement workshop capabilities, operations, and protocols
  • Member services provide members with assistance and service, including answering all queries, distributing materials, assistance with the firing process, and all issues as they relate to artist membership
  • Assist in planning and executing specialty workshops
  • Create accessible, accurate, userfriendly signage and instructions for various processes and equipment
  • Conduct orientations and training for members
  • Monitor and educate members on health and safety best practices
  • Track and maintain inventory
  • Load and monitor kilns
  • Mix glaze and clay
  • Recycle materials such as clay, slip, and glaze
  • Assist in equipment maintenance and repair
  • Collaboratively clean the studio daily
  • Occasional work required outside of regularly scheduled hours

Fabrication:


  • Under the direction of the Ceramic Studio Director, execute fabrication projects on schedule and within budget to the best of our ability
  • Research and develop innovative fabrication techniques and methods
  • Collaborate with other staff, shops, and departments on projects as needed

Development:


  • Work with the Ceramic Studio Director to identify and invite ceramic artists to collaborate with Powerhouse Arts, such as fabrication, workshops, talks, etc.
  • Explore partnerships with ceramic studios in the tristate area
  • Work with the Ceramic Studio Director to identify projects and collaborations with new clients including individual artists, institutions, and galleries
  • Work with external partners who have complementary fabrication expertise
  • Participate in Powerhouse Arts events and shop tours as needed
  • Occasional work required outside of regularly scheduled hours

Qualifications:


  • 6+ years' experience or the equivalent in ceramic studio operations
  • Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, ability to problemsolve
  • Ability to prioritize shifting needs of a busy membership and fabrication studio
  • Desire to work within a community studio setting
  • Willingness to share knowledge and serve a robust community of artists
  • Personnel management
  • Schedule management
  • Knowledge of best practices in health and safety
  • Basic understanding of kiln repair
  • Glaze formulation, testing, and mixing
  • Materials recyclingclay, slip, glaze, etc
  • Basic handy skills for studio maintenance and upgrades
  • Proficient in one or more of the following: mold making, slip casting, wheel throwing, or hand building
  • Fluency in G Suite

Areas of interest but not mandatory:

  • Realistic/ figurative sculpting skills
  • 3D printing in clay or other mediums
  • Digital fabrication, CNC machining
  • Ability to work in CAD programs
  • Ability to work with PS and ID

Compensation & Benefits:
Salary range is $70 - $75K, commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, an employer-sponsored retirement plan, generous paid vacation, sick time off, and a Citibike membership.
